BarcelonaThe Labor Inspectorate has required delivery platforms Glovo, Amazon, and Uber Eats to submit the labor protocols that their delivery workers follow during episodes of adverse weather, such as heavy rain. The body, which depends on the Generalitat, has opened an ex officio investigation into the three platforms, which is in addition to a previous investigation opened against Uber Eats at the request of the Comissions Obreres union, which accuses the company of keeping riders on the streets during a rain alert episode, as reported this Monday by Catalunya R脿dio.

These types of protocols are mandatory by law, and the three companies have until the end of this month to submit them to the Labor Department. Both Glovo and Uber Eats have assured that they comply with the regulations, while Amazon has pointed out that it does not have its own delivery fleet鈥攊t performs deliveries with subcontracted companies鈥攂ut that it does have mechanisms to react in case of severe weather alerts. In the event that any of the three companies ultimately fail to provide the protocol, the Government would force them to draft one and, at the same time, could open a sanctioning file against them, as explained by the Labor Inspectorate.

The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has assured in statements to the Cadena Ser that it is an "ex officio investigation." "We all have to adapt to climate change, also in the labor field, regarding schedules and ways of working," he added regarding the reasons that prompted the investigation.

In this sense, he praised that, during the various storms and episodes of violent weather that Catalonia has experienced in recent months, some companies in the distribution sector "anticipated the closing time of supermarkets," a decision that the president considers "a good practice."

"We must adapt quickly and protect workers and adapt working hours" to the new meteorological reality, Illa added. "The will of my government is the protection of workers"
