BarcelonaThe reindustrialization of the former Nissan factory site in Barcelona's Zona Franca is progressing. Following the arrival of car manufacturers Chery and EV Motors, the Catalan frozen dough group Europastry will land in the space starting in 2027. The food company will launch a new macro-logistics center for cold storage, a construction located near the port of Barcelona, right in front of Mercabarna, and with a total surface area of almost 9,000 square meters.
"The facilities will allow us to strengthen the connection between our production plants in Catalonia and international markets. Its strategic location and the custom design of the warehouse will make our logistics operations more efficient and will support Europastry's international growth," said the group's supply chain director, Marta Minguell, at an event held this Tuesday at the space that will house the new infrastructure.
Unlike the Chery and EV Motors factory –which reused a large part of the Nissan facilities–, the Europastry one will be the first newly constructed building on the former Japanese automaker's land. The space, designed specifically for the Catalan group, will combine the storage of frozen products at temperatures of up to -22 degrees Celsius with handling areas at controlled temperatures. It will also have an office area of 500 square meters and a roof with a photovoltaic installation of approximately 1,000 kWp, a capacity that will be consumed entirely by Europastry itself.
A step forward towards the multisectoral 'hub'
Since Nissan's farewell, the project known as the Barcelona City Hub has been in charge of the return of productive activity to the facilities. With the Japanese brand out of the Zona Franca, the Australian developer Goodman was awarded the land at the beginning of 2023, with the commitment to invest 123 million euros to develop a hub multisectoral of 144,000 square meters.
At the event held this Tuesday, its CEO in Europe, Philippe Van der Beken, claimed that the arrival of Europastry is "the result of the collaboration between public administrations, workers and companies". In this sense, he has committed to continue developing the rest of the land to "support the productive future of Barcelona and Catalonia". According to the company's forecasts, the space of the former Nissan will host between three and five clients and will reach full occupancy by 2028.
