The Liceu Mar architectural competition opens
The jury's decision will be announced in June 2026, and the building is scheduled to open in 2032.


BarcelonaThe Liceu Mar project in Barcelona's Port Vell is getting underway. It is expected to program more dance and chamber operas. The Liceu Mar is expected to become a reality in 2032. The estimated cost for the construction of the building is approximately 47.2 million euros (including VAT) and the urban planning of the area is approximately 28.9 million euros (including VAT). The winner will be selected in June 2026. The competition conditions stipulate that the building must be 9,000 m².2 and acoustic and technical studies will be required. At the same time, urban planning will be carried out, affecting approximately 32,000 m2.2 and the modification of the special urban development plan must be processed.
The first phase of the competition will serve to select the five finalist proposals. The unsuccessful teams that have participated correctly in the second phase and obtain a minimum score of 50 points will receive a financial compensation of 25,000 euros. The competition promoter reserves the right to exhibit or publish all submitted works, always indicating their authorship. The bidding budget for the design competition is 1.2 million euros, shared equally between the Gran Teatre del Liceu and the Port of Barcelona.
The competition jury is chaired by urban planner Martha Thorne. The members are: engineers David Pino Roca, manager of the urban planning department of Port Vell of the Port Authority; Xavier Sagrera, technical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu Foundation, and Ángel Pindado Rodríguez, director of external connection projects and infrastructure at the Port Authority of Barcelona; architects Elsa Ibar, deputy director general of works and services of the Department of Culture of the Catalan Government, and Núria Moliné; and architects Gustau Gili i Galifeti, Rosa M. Rull i Beltran, and Lluís Dilmé i Romagós, all three nominated by the College of Architects of Catalonia (COAC). The secretaries of the jury are architects Xavier Fabré and Pau Díez.
