BarcelonaWe bid farewell to a 2025 of contrasts, with a start marked by drought and an end dominated by rain and abundant snow. In some parts of the country, it was one of the wettest end-of-year periods in decades. A stable and pleasant start to the new year awaits us, with cold temperatures and intervals of cloud cover, allowing us to enjoy a brief respite from the weather before a change in the climate that will coincide with the arrival of the Three Kings.

Weather forecast for this New Year's Day morning.

New Year's Eve: More frosts inland

We'll start the year with very stable weather and few changes, with a cold and typical climate for this time of year. There will be some inland fog, but also intervals of high clouds moving from west to east, leaving the sky overcast throughout the afternoon, with some showers in the Balearic Islands. The minimum temperature will drop even further, and frost will reach more inland areas, with cold temperatures also along the coast. The lowest temperatures will again be in the Pyrenean valleys and lowlands, reaching lows of -8/-9 °C in some places. Maximum temperatures will also be quite low, with little sunshine to provide warmth during the middle of the day.

Weather forecast for this New Year's Day afternoon.

Friday: more clouds, no rain

Temperatures will rise slightly towards Friday, both day and night, although it will generally remain cold and frost is still expected in many areas. Some morning fog will return, and more thin to medium-sized clouds will move in, resulting in partly cloudy skies. We won't be talking about precipitation yet, but rain is possible in the northern half of the country on Saturday, with the snow level trending downwards and potentially reaching 1,000 meters.

Waiting for a cold air mass to arrive with the Three Wise Men

For days now, meteorologists in the western half of the European continent have been closely monitoring every weather model release, given the possibility of snow on our doorsteps. It's clear that northern countries are more likely to experience it, simply due to their geographical location, but it seems certain that in our country we will enjoy (or suffer, depending on your perspective) a cold snap arriving from January 5th onwards, with noticeably colder temperatures and widespread frosts inland. The two main weather models, the European and the American, indicate that this cold front will be accompanied by snow at lower elevations in some areas, thanks to the presence of a low-pressure system. FrancisBut it is a possibility that cannot yet be confirmed, both because of the days that remain and because of the complexity of predicting snow at low elevations in a Mediterranean country, where many factors come into play.

But to give you an idea, this is the snow accumulation map predicted by the American model for Three Kings' Day. As you can see, snow could be present in practically every European country, including France, Italy, parts of Greece and Turkey, and also the Iberian Peninsula. The latest updates, in fact, reinforce the possibility of significant snowfall in the central and southeastern parts of the peninsula.
