BarcelonaTemperatures reached their peak yesterday in many regions, especially along the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona and Central Catalonia. A peak of heat that left extraordinary and completely out of place highs of up to 37 or 38°C in these areas, some eight or nine degrees above average for this time of year (you'll find all the data at the end of this report), but the thermometers will already drop this Thursday. It will continue to be very hot in the middle of summer, but without the extremes of the last two days.

Only 35°C will be exceeded in Ponent, after a night in which it cooled in many places, but which has returned to tropical temperatures in some cases, especially on the coast. On Saturday, there may be a new and brief peak of warmth inland, and thermometers will remain clearly above average for several days. All with sun, suspended dust, and little rain in the short term. The afternoon showers that left between 1 and 5 l/m² on Wednesday in the southern interior and in the Pyrenees and western Pre-Pyrenees will not be repeated today.

Thursday: Extreme heat eases

The night has once again been tropical in many coastal areas, while lows above 20°C have been more difficult to see in the pre-coastal and inland areas, where the cool night air has dominated. Today, highs will ease slightly and drop by between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius overall, especially where they peaked yesterday, on the central coast and pre-coastal. The heat will not be as extreme as the last two days, although the atmosphere will still be summer-like.

Most highs will range between 27 and 33°C, although in the West, temperatures will be between 35 and 37°C. The muggy weather will be marked along the coast, but most highs will remain below 30°C thanks to the marine breeze. All sunny and calm, with dust in suspension, some low clouds or local fog on the coast, and harmless afternoon clouds in areas of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. Unlike recent days, no afternoon showers are expected this Thursday.

Forecast map for this Thursday afternoon.

Above average heat for many days

Temperatures will remain very high for this season throughout the rest of the week and into next summer. This early summer is here to stay. In fact, some weather models indicate we could see a resurgence of heat next week.

The sun will remain bright, with dust in suspension and a slight chance of rain. Some light showers will reappear on Friday and Saturday in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, especially in the west. Sunday could see further instability, generally due to the entry of some cold air from high altitude, but not all weather models agree on this.

Heat peak balance

Temperatures reached their peak yesterday in many regions, especially on the Barcelona coast and pre-coastline, and in Central Catalonia, where temperatures reached 37 or 38 °C locally. Even in the city of Barcelona, temperatures exceeded 33 °C. Thermometers soared as high as yesterday in Ponent, where temperatures barely reached 35 or 36 °C, far from yesterday's 38 °C. Tuesday and Wednesday were the hottest days of the year. These are the most notable highs from this sweltering Wednesday:

  • 38.4 °C, Artesa de Segre
  • 38 ºC, Artes
  • 37.7 ºC, the Canós
  • 37.5 ºC, Caldes de Montbui
  • 37.4 ºC, Oliana

Also worth noting are the tropical lows, which have weakened on Thursday after being repeated in several locations on Tuesday and Wednesday, including inland areas, especially in high elevations. However, the coast is where the most lows above 20°C have been recorded, particularly in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona, where today's low was 23.5°C, but yesterday it was close to 24°C. The Fabra Observatory also did not drop below 22.8°C tonight, and Montserrat mountain reached 21.4°C, while at lower altitudes it was cooler. Cities such as Lleida and Girona experienced their first tropical night early Tuesday morning, but both Wednesday and Thursday saw a further cooling off at night.
