Record temperatures at this start of September

BarcelonaThe temperature has climbed sharply again and is breaking records. Today, at the Fabra observatory, it reached 33.1 °C, half a degree less than yesterday, when 33.6 °C was recorded. Today's value is the second highest since 1914 for a September in the city of Barcelona. In Ponent and the interior of the Ebro, it brushed 40 °C (39 °C in Vinebre, one of the highest since 2022). If we take the set of automatic Meteocat stations, 27 of the 128 total have broken records for a month of September in 20 years of data, especially those located in Empordà, the Pyrenees, and Ponent.

And we will continue to talk about extreme heat for the next three days. The temperature will be between 33 °C and 36 °C in many regions. 36 °C will be reached in many inland points, with heat that is unusual for these September dates. Temperature records could be reached, once again, in Ponent, in the Empordà and in the interior of the Ebro valley, where 40 °C could be exceeded. The minimum temperature will also rise and tropical minimums will again gain ground on the coast, in the pre-coastal area and in Ponent, with torrid values (equal to or greater than 25 °C) on the central coast.

Friday: heatwave environment

Day with intervals of morning clouds on the Costa Daurada and in the Ebro, with some decorative cumulus in the afternoon in the Pyrenees. The mercury will reach the highs of the episode in some points on Friday, when the maximums will reach 37 °C or 38 °C in more places in the interior, with some local record of 40 °C. These are unusual values and, in many cases, record-breaking, which would not even be common at the end of July or the beginning of August. The weather will remain calm, the sun will be the protagonist and there will be no precipitation on the horizon.

In fact, Meteocat has issued a danger warning for intense heat for Friday and Saturday that covers a large part of the regions of Ponent, central Catalonia and the south, and even some regions of the pre-coastal area or the central coast.

Warm peak during the weekend

The warm air mass affecting the Iberian Peninsula will reach its peak during the weekend, when the temperature will be exceptional for the dates at 1,500 meters. On Saturday, the temperature will reach 38 °C in the central pre-coastal area and the Bages, and could touch 39 °C or 40 °C in the interior of the Empordà, in Ponent, and in the Ebro valley, a situation that will also repeat on Sunday. Thin clouds and a lot of haze will appear in the sky, which will accentuate the feeling of heat. On the coast, we will continue with mugginess and tropical nights on the central coast.

Monday and Tuesday we will continue with heat, but not as extreme. From the middle of next week, the thermometers would begin to normalize and some thunderstorms could appear in the Lleida Pyrenees.
