Rain truce and brief rebound of the heat Wednesday

BarcelonaThe episode of storms and downpours has affected this Tuesday above all a large part of the coast and the pre-coast, but especially the Barcelona area and points of the Girona coast. In many cases the intensity has been torrential, which has caused sudden rises in rivers and streams and numerous floods. Where it has rained the most has been in the Alt Penedès, Garraf, Anoia, Baix Llobregat, Vallès Occidental, Barcelonès, Baix Empordà and Gironès, with many records of 50 to 100 l/m² or locally more, many of which fell in just over an hour (you will find the most important data at the end of this information).

Until late into the night, irregular but locally strong showers and thunderstorms will still occur, especially in the northeastern regions, the Pyrenees, and the Pre-Pyrenees. On the other hand, on Wednesday the rain will take a break, and there will only be some local afternoon showers and variable skies. What we will notice will be a clear rise in temperatures after Tuesday's drop, with a temporary spike in heat to say goodbye to the month of September. But starting Thursday, instability will increase again and temperatures will drop once more.

Wednesday: more calm and heat

The weather will be much calmer this Wednesday, the last day of the month, as in general no rain is expected. However, the sky will be variable due to the presence of quite a few cloud intervals, and it will even be overcast in the western regions during the morning. On the other hand, towards the northeast there will be many more clearings. In the afternoon, some local and minor showers will escape in parts of the Pyrenees, the Pre-Pyrenees, the pre-coastal area and the Ports. Not much, and in the vast majority of the territory it will not rain.

All this with temperatures that will be similar early in the day, with an atmosphere between cool and mild in general and new slightly tropical lows in coastal stretches. As for the highs, they will clearly rise after Tuesday's drop, with an ascent that will be especially marked in parts of the interior and the northeast. Many values between 26 ºC and 31 ºC are expected. A brief summer that will be transitory.

More showers in the coming days

The weather situation will become complicated again in the coming days, as instability will remain pronounced. Thursday and Friday will see recurring irregular showers, especially in parts of the Pyrenees, the interior, and the south, as well as in the Valencian Community. Locally, they will be intense and may be accompanied by storms.

Some weather models indicate that over the weekend a more extensive wave of rain could arrive, but this possibility is still very uncertain. Temperatures will drop again and, little by little, will normalize for the season, especially starting from the weekend. It seems that, now, autumn will finally impose itself completely over summer.

Flash flood assessment

The torrential downpours have mainly affected the coast and pre-coast of Barcelona and Girona, with many records of 50 to 100 l/m², locally more. Water that fell torrentially in just between one and three hours, which caused flooding and many problems. For example, at the Torroella de Montgrí (Baix Empordà) weather station, more than 100 l/m² fell in little more than an hour, or 54 in half an hour. Too much water in such a short time. In the rest of Catalonia it rained less, although also with locally strong showers and storms, especially in other areas of the coast and pre-coast.
