New heatwave from mid-week
Temperatures will again brush 40ºC in Ponent on Wednesday
BarcelonaThe passage of an upper trough has cooled the atmosphere and renewed the warm Saharan air mass. With its passage, it has generated thunderstorms that, in various regions, have discharged with intensity, especially during Saturday and also early Sunday morning, with very photogenic and spectacular electrical storms off the coast.
The maximums have slowed down, with very bearable heat and nothing to do with the extreme values of recent weeks. The highest values have been concentrated in the pre-coastal areas, in Empordà and Ebre, with values between 32°C and 33°C.
Regarding new thunderstorms, activity has only been observed in the northeast, with some showers that have accumulated, for example, 1 l/m2 in Anglès.
From Monday, the heat returns
Monday will still maintain bearable heat, with highs between 30 °C and 34 °C (in Ponent) and lows around 22 °C on the coast. Tuesday will start to see temperatures rise, but still far from extremes. It will be from Wednesday that thermometers will once again shoot up above average and intense heat will return. A new warm African mass will bring values close to 28 °C at 850 hPa (1,500 m). This will reheat the lower and middle layers of the troposphere and will cause the thermometer to rise in the inland plains and pre-Pyrenean valleys to 39 °C (Wednesday).
The day will be marked by clear skies and only a few low clouds will appear on the central coast or the Costa Daurada. From midday they will dissipate, giving way to a sunny afternoon. Only some developing clouds are expected in the Pyrenees or Pre-Pyrenees, which will no longer cause precipitation. A little northerly wind will blow early on, as well as mistral, but it will no longer be as strong as on Sunday morning (it reached up to 90 km/h in Portbou). There will be calm seas in the morning north of Cap de Creus and slight choppiness in the rest.
