The weather

More storms and general cooling

The thunderstorms will reactivate again from midday

25/07/2026 - 21:01 h.

BarcelonaThe passage of an upper trough has changed the weather in recent hours. Thunderstorms have discharged intensely due to the generation of large convection clouds fed by cold air that has descended from more northerly latitudes. This clash of air masses with very different conditions has contributed to intense showers, accompanied by electrical activity, hail, and sleet (for example, in Arbúcies). By mid-afternoon on Saturday, we had already accumulated up to 35 l/m2 in Sant Llorenç Savall and between 15 and 30 l/m2 around the Montseny massif.

Sunday: unsettled weather and general cooling

During Sunday the weather will change throughout the country. On the one hand, thunderstorms will discharge during the early morning along the coast and pre-coast, and also off the Catalan coast. Locally, they will leave abundant amounts (20 or 30 l/m2 in half an hour). At the beginning of the day there will be retained clouds and some last shower will fall, but clearings will open and the morning will give a break. The mistral wind will blow with strong gusts in Camp de Tarragona and Ebre, as will the tramontana, which will raise considerable swell north of Cape Creus.

Temperatures will (finally!) drop, especially where there has been some rain or thunderstorms. The night will be cooler overall, and tropical minimums will be concentrated near the sea. Maximums will be significantly restrained, with very bearable heat and nothing like the extreme values of recent weeks. In parts of the Pyrenees and inland, maximums will be 6 to 11 degrees lower than Thursday.

Most of the highest maximums will range between 27°C and 33°C (in Ponent). In mountain areas, the cool weather will last all day, and on the coast, the sultriness will also ease.

From midday onwards, evolving cloudiness will reactivate and showers will again fall in the northeast, mainly. New ones will appear in the afternoon in parts of the Pyrenees and eastern pre-Pyrenees and between Girona and Barcelona. It is not ruled out that some storm may be locally intense, accompanied by hail or sleet, especially in the sector between Guilleries-Collsacabra, the Montseny massif and southern Baix Empordà. In the evening or at night, they may also reach coastal areas, such as, for example, Maresme or Baix Llobregat.

Starting Monday, the heat returns, but without being extreme

Monday will still see bearable heat, with highs between 30°C and 34°C (in Ponent) and lows around 22°C on the coast. Tuesday will start to see temperatures rise, but still far from extremes. It will be from Wednesday that thermometers will shoot up again above average and intense heat will return. So we will have to take advantage of the brief respite we will have these days, especially on the coast, where we will be able to rest a little better at night, without so much mugginess.
