The calm at the start of the week won't last. We're on the verge of a significant change in the weather, the first signs of which will appear today, with increased cloud cover and the first scattered, light showers, especially along the coast and pre-coastal areas. Early Thursday morning will see a full-blown cold front sweep across the region, bringing widespread rain, some downpours, and the first significant snowfall of autumn in the higher Pyrenees. This unsettled weather will continue for the next few days. Meteocat has already issued alerts for heavy rain in most regions for Thursday, and Civil Protection has activated the Inuncat flood plan. All of this will take place in a distinctly autumnal atmosphere.

Wednesday: busier weather

Cloud cover will increase this Wednesday. In the morning, the clouds will be more significant along the coast and in the pre-coastal areas, where the first scattered showers or raindrops will arrive before midday. These are most likely along the central coast, while morning fog will return inland. In the afternoon, cloud cover will become more widespread, with overcast skies across much of the coast, pre-coastal areas, and Central Catalonia. Showers will spread sporadically in these areas, and in the afternoon they may reach more areas, especially the Pre-Pyrenees and the southern slopes of the Pyrenees. However, it won't rain everywhere.

The southerly wind will strengthen in the afternoon and will be noticeable at higher elevations, in the Ponent region, in the southern mountains, and on the Costa Brava. Minimum temperatures have risen considerably due to the cloud cover, with a more moderate morning chill. In some areas, the overnight temperature rise has been more than 5°C compared to yesterday, and there has only been some localized frost in a few Pyrenean valleys, notably -3°C in Das (Cerdanya). Maximum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, with many areas reaching 17 to 22°C. This Wednesday at 2:19 p.m. the peak of November's supermoon, the biggest of the year, will arrive. With increased cloud cover forecast, it's a good thing we enjoyed the phenomenon last night.

Widespread rain on Thursday

The passage of an active cold front will bring widespread rain during the early hours and morning of Thursday. The precipitation will affect all regions and cross the entire country from west to east, with downpours that could be locally heavy and accompanied by thunderstorms. The first significant and widespread snowfall will also occur in the higher elevations of the Pyrenees throughout the day, especially above 2,000 or 2,200 meters. The heaviest snowfall is expected in the Alt Pirineu, with accumulations of between 10 and 20 centimeters of new snow.

From midday Thursday, sunshine and wind will prevail in many areas, but some lingering showers will remain in the northeast, the Pyrenees, and the Pre-Pyrenees. Between Friday and Saturday, the weather will remain unsettled, with more showers expected. It's unclear whether a Mediterranean low-pressure system will develop and directly affect us, which will determine the amount of rain expected in the final part of the week. This uncertain situation will need to be monitored closely. All of this will be accompanied by an even more autumnal feel.
