The weather

Less extreme heat and more afternoon thunderstorms this week

Midweek we will breathe better, but the thermal descent will be transitory

BarcelonaThe core of the warm air mass affecting us these days continues to move away towards Eastern Europe and its effects will begin to weaken from today due to the passage of a frontal tail. In fact, during Sunday afternoon and night, showers appeared, especially in Ponent and the Pyrenees, which brought little precipitation and strong gusts of wind. However, the thermometer still rose considerably this weekend and the heat peaks have been notable, with a maximum of up to 39.4 °C yesterday in the city of Lleida or 38.8 °C in Albesa, in La Noguera (at the end of this information you will find the highest maximums reached yesterday).

And this morning has been very warm in general, with tropical lows in many places and torrid temperatures in coastal areas, with very marked sultriness. Of note are the 27.2 °C minimum recorded in the Raval neighborhood of Barcelona. Today the thermometers will drop and tomorrow they will rise again transiently, waiting for Wednesday for the decrease to be clearer and for us to breathe much better. But the mercury will simply normalize, while waiting for intense heat to return during the second part of the week. Therefore, the scorching heat will give few breaks in the coming days, all accompanied by afternoon showers in the Pyrenees and other areas of the northern half.

Monday: temperature drops

The weakening of the North African mass of warm air will allow a slight drop in temperature. The tail of a front will facilitate the entry of cold air at altitude and will channel some tramuntana in the Empordà and mistral in the south, with maritime disturbance and strong swell north of Cape Begur. This situation will normalize the thermometer a bit, which, in any case, will no longer reach such high values. It will be hot, but not as extreme in the Ebro valley or the plain of Lleida. For example, in Ponent they will no longer exceed 37°C. On the coast, there will be few changes and the temperature will still hover around 32°C, while the wind will blow superheated on the Costa Brava and the southern coast, where there will be more dry heat.

This cooler air will help to grow convective clouds that, from midday, will leave new showers and thunderstorms. During the afternoon they will gain ground in the northern half of the country and the thunderstorms will be distributed irregularly throughout the eastern Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, the north of Central Catalonia, the northeast interior and the Ports. The showers will fall in these areas on both Monday and Tuesday afternoons. Meteocat has activated alerts for intense rain in some northern counties.

Week with normal heat for this time of year

The situation is normalizing and the heat will be as it usually is for this time of year by Wednesday, considering it will be the first day of July, a very hot month in our area. Thermometers will hover around 35°C in Ponent and in the rest of the territory they will range between 28°C and 33°C. It will be a little less muggy on the coast. Calm atmosphere and slightly more uncertain afternoons in the Pyrenees.
