A future kindergarten teacher, the invisible angel that drives Spar Girona
The Viladecans resident Carol Guerrero makes her discreet work count
TarragonaA Spar Girona conditioned by the physical problems of key players faces the Copa de la Reina in Tarragona with ambition starting this Friday. The Catalan team will debut by playing the quarterfinals against Perfumerías Avenida, a rival against whom many of the last titles have been disputed. One of Roberto Íñiguez's secret weapons is Carol Guerrero, a discreet player who always performs above the praise she receives. “I am a very shy and introverted person, but when they give me confidence, I am the most fun person you can meet. It's a bit difficult for me, but I think with the passage of time I have been improving this, although I still have a way to go,” she says.Guerrero, who in a few days will compete in the final six of the Euroleague, is ambitious. “The challenge is to win titles with Spar Girona, but beyond the results, I feel very satisfied with my personal improvement because there have been years that have not been easy. I have always believed in myself and I'll stick with that. Titles are very cool, but without effort and commitment I wouldn't have achieved them,” recalls the power forward.
The 25-year-old from Viladecans has her priorities clear. “90% of my life is basketball. We spend our days training and traveling and end up sharing a lot of things. We have little time to be with family, but I'm lucky that they live nearby. I try to stay focused on basketball,” says Guerrero, who has already debuted with the Spanish national team.
While growing up in the shadow of Chloe Bibby, humility is her hallmark. “My role model has always been my sister, but it's true that in the professional world I grew up watching Anna Cruz, Silvia Domínguez, Laia Palau... With Anna and Laia, moreover, I was lucky to meet them. I still have a lot to learn,” she warns. When she was younger, she was more insecure. When she made a mistake, she lost concentration. Not anymore. “I learned from people and now there are younger people who are learning from me. I think I have to do things right, and if I can help them grow and reach where I am, I will always be happy to do so. It is very important to have role models. When you look at them, you think that you can also get there. You imagine that they have gone through many problems and adversities, but they have bounced back and that is always useful. Having role models helps you work with a clear objective,” she summarizes.
Trained at CB Almeda and CBS Barça, Guerrero is playing her second season at Spar Girona. “I had the best years of my life at CB Almeda. I learned a lot and thanks to them I am here. They taught me that character on the court is the best thing you can bring out and you have to fight for everything. Basketball is about that,” she opines."I would like to be a teacher"
Outside of basketball, Guerrero's great vocation is teaching. “I finished a higher degree in early childhood education. They were very tough years because I had to go to class, do my internships, study at noon, and train. They were difficult years. In the future I would like to work in that, but we'll see. I would like to be an early childhood teacher. I've always liked children and I think that when all this is over, it will be my goal,” she advances.
