BarcelonaDonald Trump picks up the gauntlet from the Spanish far-right and stirs controversy over the euthanasia of Noelia Castillo, the 25-year-old girl who last Thursday, after a long legal battle, obtained assisted death in a socio-health center in Sant Pere de Ribes. According to the New York Post publishes, the North American administration has opened an investigation into the case due to suspicions that Spain may have incurred "failures" in "human rights matters".

The news from the aforementioned media, which comes amid tension between Spain and the US due to Pedro Sánchez's opposition to the war in Iran, assures that the State Department has commissioned the corresponding investigations to the United States Embassy in Madrid. The information indicates that US diplomatic personnel have also been asked to convey to La Moncloa the "grave concerns" of the Trump administration regarding what it considers the "many systemic failures in human rights matters" that led Castillo to request euthanasia.

The Spanish government's reaction has been swift. The Minister of Health, Mónica García, has stated that "Spain is a serious country, with a healthcare system and a framework of rights that protects and cares for all people, including those who decide to ask for help to die with dignity," she said, emphasizing that this circumstance is regulated by law and evaluated by clinical committees and courts.

The minister has contrasted this reality with that of the US, where "thousands of people die each year without medical insurance," and with Trump's own attitude, who "supports and carries out human rights violations between Gaza and Iran." "Let him stop feeding the ultra-international agenda by sticking his nose in everywhere," she stressed.

Washington's arguments for focusing on this case, in fact, stem from the claims and manipulations wielded by the far-right parties Vox and Abogados Cristianos, who tried until the end to stop the young woman's death in the courts. On the one hand, and always according to the State Department report released by the New York Post, the US points out that Noelia Castillo suffered sexual assault while under state custody, although the multiple rape she suffered - and which led her to attempt suicide - occurred in 2022, when she was already an adult; on the other hand, they claim that she expressed last-minute "doubts" about her death, which did not happen.

Be that as it may, the Trump administration's document takes a middle ground and concludes: "This case raises serious concerns about the application of Spanish euthanasia law, particularly in cases involving psychiatric conditions and non-terminal suffering."

The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has also reacted to the news of the American investigation. In a message on X, he assured that he will defend “with all firmness” the professionals of the Catalan healthcare system and has vindicated “the right to a dignified death” with “one of the most advanced and exemplary legal frameworks in the world”.
