Tragic Carnival Night: Seven dead on Catalan roads, including a pregnant woman
Five accidents bring the death toll for 2025 to 29

BarcelonaTragic night on Catalan roads. According to the Catalan Traffic Service (SCT), this past Carnival night there have been five traffic accidents on Catalan roads that have caused the death of six people. "They are all very dramatic accidents, among the victims and the injured there are many young people under 35 years of age," lamented the director of the Catalan Traffic Service, Ramon Lamiel, who has shown "maximum concern" about the increase in young victims.
"Until 2024 we were concerned about the age group from 55 years old and now we are talking about a much younger age group," he warned. The director of Traffic insisted that some of the determining factors in tonight's accidents were alcohol, speed and distractions. He also detailed the circumstances in which the five fatal accidents occurred tonight and clarified that, beyond the three determining factors mentioned, there is no pattern that is repeated between the accidents.
One of the fatal accidents was on the C-25 in Gurb (Osona). A van that was travelling in the wrong direction collided head-on with a car in which a 36-year-old pregnant woman and a 35-year-old man were travelling. Both died while the driver of the van was less seriously injured. Lamiel described this accident as "implausible".
Two accidents were also recorded on the C-58. One was in Vacarisses (Vallès Occidental) and occurred due to a car leaving the road and ending up embedded in a house. The accident left one fatality: a 39-year-old man. The traffic officer explained that the motives are still being investigated, but asked that "they stick to the concurrent causes that they had previously mentioned [alcohol, speed and distractions]."
Still on the C-58 in Badia del Vallès, Lamiel explained that "in the middle of the motorway" there had been a fatal accident. The emergency services received a call that a vehicle had collided with another that had broken down and the driver of the broken down car, a 24-year-old woman, was run over and died. Another 25-year-old woman was taken to hospital in critical condition where she ended up dying. The accident also left four others injured. Lamiel warned that this is the second fatal accident of the year that has occurred on this motorway. "There must be much better signposting that pedestrians cannot circulate on these roads to protect them," he acknowledged.
This evening there was also a "very dramatic" accident on the AP-7, in L'Aldea (Baix Ebre) when a car went off the road. The driver of the car died and there was also one person injured in a very critical condition and another less seriously. In addition, this morning it was also reported that a 57-year-old man died in Terrassa due to a fatal accident on an urban road.
The director of the Catalan Traffic Service wanted to end his appearance by expressing "condolences to all the families who have been affected by the accidents tonight" and insisted that they are at their disposal: "We are at their side."
Almost 30 victims in two months
With these victims, 29 people have already lost their lives on Catalan roads in just over two months of 2025. Yesterday, a head-on collision between two cars on the C-16 in Cercs (Berguedà) caused the death of a 59-year-old woman from Barcelona, who was travelling as a passenger. Following the accident, which also left five injured, one of the drivers was arrested on charges of reckless homicide. The arrested woman did not test positive in the alcohol tests, but the police are now investigating what motivated the woman to invade the opposite lane.
