BarcelonaEmergency teams located the lifeless body of the woman, aged about 35, this Sunday morning, who had reportedly fallen into a stream in Cabrera de Mar on Saturday evening during the rainstorm caused by the 'Adam' DANA and which has mainly affected the central coast of the country. The body was found near the breakwater of the port of Premià de Mar, following a search operation that mobilized the Generalitat Firefighters, the Mossos d'Esquadra, and Maritime Rescue throughout the night. After not finding her in the stream, they expanded the search to the sea and, finally, she was located about 6 kilometers from the point where she disappeared.
The disappearance report to emergency services was made shortly before eight in the evening. The woman had allegedly been swept away by the water while trying to cross the stream with her two children and her husband. As the mayor of Cabrera de Mar, Òscar Fernández, explained, the family had just left the municipal sports hall, where a basketball game had been played. "When it was raining so hard, it was requested that people not leave the municipal sports hall. It seems that there were people who decided to leave despite the rain, and they tried to cross the stream when 60 liters were falling in 40 minutes," explained Fernández.
This Sunday, Fire Department sources indicated that they had found an item of clothing and a handbag near the river mouth that could belong to the victim. Mayor Òscar Fernández has reported that the town councils of Cabrera and Malgrat lament the loss and will declare official mourning and call for a minute of silence in both municipalities this Monday. He also made an appeal not to disregard the warnings issued by the Generalitat and the town councils: "A downpour cannot be disregarded and can lead to fatal consequences like those we have witnessed today." In Cabrera de Mar, 57 liters per square meter accumulated in less than an hour, in an episode that forced the activation of emergency services.
Illa: the storm "is not over"
The torrential rains this Saturday have left very intense records in several parts of Catalonia and have caused sudden rises in streams and flooding. Although the storm has been losing intensity this Sunday, the president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has warned that the risk episode is "not over yet" and has asked for maximum caution given the forecast of a new cold drop episode this Monday "of which the affected territory will be fully calibrated this afternoon".
The head of the executive has specified that the Operational Coordination Centre of Catalonia (CECAT) will meet over the next few hours to assess the evolution of the situation and specify warnings to the population. Illa has stressed that it is necessary to remain attentive to the instructions of Civil Protection despite the progressive improvement in the weather.
"I ask that everyone remains very attentive and acts with maximum caution", insisted the Catalan president, while thanking the "conduct" of the citizenry during this weekend. Shortly after, Illa lamented in a message on X the death of the woman who went missing in Maresme and thanked the work of the emergency and police teams: "I regret the death of a woman in Cabrera de Mar as a consequence of the torrential rains [yesterday]. My heartfelt condolences to her relatives and friends".
The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, has also asked the public this Sunday to exercise extreme caution in the face of the DANA 'Adam', which is affecting various parts of the country, and to follow the instructions of the emergency services. In a message published on X, Sánchez pointed out that the Spanish government is "very attentive" to the evolution of the situation.
