The works on Badalona's Petroli bridge will affect the Maritime promenade in the summer
The works will begin in June and will extend until autumn
BadalonaThe works to recover the Petroli bridge in Badalona will begin the first week of June and will last until October or November. This has been announced by the mayor of the city, Xavier García Albiol, who explained that the work will occupy part of the beach and the Maritime Promenade during the summer season. "The works have to be done in summer because it is the best time to do them from the sea. They cannot be done in autumn or winter," Albiol detailed. More specifically, the forecast is that about 75 meters on each side of the bridge will be occupied in the beach section, and on the Maritime Promenade, passage will be blocked at the height of the infrastructure to allow trucks to pass.
The recovery of the Petroli bridge comes after the infrastructure was affected during the Gloria storm in 2020, when the strong waves destroyed the platform located at the end of the walkway. Six years later and after an analysis process, the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) has presented the project to recover it. With a cost of 4 million euros, the works will serve to restore the original image of the walkway, while in the final section the design will be modified to one with a circular shape.
A series of actions that, as Albiol highlighted, represent an important step for the restoration of one of Badalona's most emblematic spaces. In this regard, the mayor specified that the bridge will also have a research space, a meteorological station, and a new lighting system.
More resilience against storms
To carry out the work, a 500-square-meter self-elevating and fixed platform will be installed on four piles embedded in the seabed, which will be raised in case of storms so that the waves do not affect it. "It is about restoring what we currently have," explained the engineer from Espai Públic of the AMB, Víctor Ortiz, who added that the structure will be articulated to have more rigidity and resistance. A point reinforced by the manager of the AMB, Ramon Torra, who highlighted that the action is expected to provide "a resilient bridge to combat increasingly frequent storms".
The platform will be about 120 square meters and have a free passage width for users of four meters. In addition, the mayor also stated that it will be used to renovate the Maritime Promenade, as the last comprehensive renovation was in 2012, and that work will be done on the Gorg canal to turn Badalona's maritime facade into "an even more attractive place".
