BarcelonaThe Minister of Interior, Núria Parlon, has opened the door to modifying regulations so that passengers cannot travel standing in intercity buses, especially on mountain roads. "This is not illegal, and now we should really see if this should not be changed," she stated in an interview with RAC1 following the bus accident in Fogars de Montclús. Parlon has defended that it is necessary to study whether passengers should travel seated on these journeys to reduce risks: "Passengers on intercity routes, and even more so on mountain roads, perhaps should go seated."
Parlon has explained that the causes of the incident are still to be determined. The firefighters are continuing the tasks to remove the vehicle and reconstruct the accident scene, after it was not possible to lift the bus on Sunday night for safety reasons.
"It is almost a miracle"
The minister thanked the emergency services for their work and described it as a "miracle" that there were no fatalities. "After seeing how the bus ended up and how it was embedded, this is almost a miracle," she said, in reference to the severity of the accident.
Parlon also added that it is necessary to study how the safety of passengers can be guaranteed on interurban routes and pointed out that the review could affect lines such as those connecting the Maresme with Barcelona. Among the options, she mentioned increasing the frequency of the service to respond to mobility needs if restrictions are introduced.
