Messages on Isak Andic's mobile, key to focusing police attention on his son
The Mossos d'Esquadra found indications when analyzing the phone of the founder of Mango after his death
BarcelonaThe investigation into the death of Mango founder Isak Andic is currently at a key moment. The Mossos d'Esquadra are analyzing the personal mobile phone of his eldest son, Jonathan Andic, who is being investigated in this case, which is being handled by the courts of Martorell. The police have been searching for a month for conversations, photographs, emails, and other potentially suspicious elements. Before reaching this point, one of the elements that the police investigation has taken into account is the emptying of his father's mobile phone, as ARA has been able to ascertain.
Specifically, this newspaper has been able to verify that on Isak Andic's phone, the Mossos found messages with his son that evidenced tension between them. They formed part of a kind of therapeutic procedure that Jonathan Andic was receiving, from which comments against his father were derived; messages that the Catalan police analyzed and were important in ultimately investigating the eldest son of the Mango founder, according to sources familiar with the investigation.
This police focus has also come about after Jonathan Andic's statements were, in the investigators' opinion, incongruous in certain points, as was his behavior. For example, he changed his mobile phone after the tragic event. However, the same sources emphasize that these are not conclusive proofs, that they do not in any case point to the eldest son's guilt, but rather have served the police to continue investigating and to be able to request judicial measures such as the seizure of his phone to empty it.
Statement from the TSJC
decreed the provisional archiving of the case in mid-January because it saw no signs of a crime. But it finally ended up being reopened. This statement generated astonishment in some sectors linked to the investigation. According to Efe, lawyer Cristóbal Martell, who has been advising Jonathan Andic for months, has stated that they have not yet been notified that he is formally under investigation. He has confirmed the seizure of the mobile phone, and that immediately after this the defense filed a brief in court asking the magistrate for the order that authorized the Mossos to obtain the device. Martell adds that he has not yet received a response to his request.
The family's circle
In statements to Europa Press, sources close to the family assure that "they have not made and will not make comments about the death of Isak Andic". "However, they want to show their respect for the proceedings that have been carried out and will continue to collaborate, as they have done so far, with the competent authorities. They are also sure that this process will end as soon as possible and will demonstrate the innocence of Jonathan Andic," the same sources affirm.
This is a complex investigation. Nine months ago, the owner of Mango died at the age of 71 while hiking in the Salnitre caves, in Collbató. They were both alone and no witnesses to the events appeared. Initially, the main hypothesis of the Mossos was that the death of Isak Andic in Montserrat was accidental, falling to his death from a height of about 150 meters, a fall that caused his death.
In fact, the same court of Martorell decreed the provisional closure of the case in mid-January because it saw no indication of a crime. But it was finally reopened. The messages described above and the son's contradictions have been important elements in reaching that point. In parallel, the Mossos analyzed the conflicts he had had with his father, as well as the economic benefits that could be derived from his inheritance.
Until his death, Isak Andic was the richest man in Catalonia and the fifth largest fortune in Spain, with assets of 4,500 million euros, according to the latest report by Forbes magazine; assets that increased by 66% in the last year. Andic had had three children with his first wife, Neus Raig: the aforementioned Jonathan, Judith, and Sarah. His current partner was Estefanía Knuth.
