Montblanc, against Google Maps: "The municipality becomes collapsed"

BarcelonaThe Montblanc City Council has asked the Catalan Traffic Service to intercede so that Google Maps stops recommending drivers to cross the urban center to avoid traffic jams on the AP-2 and N-240. In an interview with El món a RAC1, Marc Vinya, the town's mayor, has denounced that the navigator's diversions end up collapsing the municipality's streets, especially on Fridays and Sundays and during holiday periods.

The problem is concentrated at the roundabout that connects the AP-2, the N-240, and the C-14, which cannot absorb the entire volume of traffic. When long queues form, some drivers follow Google Maps' instructions and enter Montblanc to try to save time. The City Council wants the application to incorporate an incident that warns that crossing the municipality is not a valid alternative.

The situation worsens on Sundays, when vehicles returning from the Costa Daurada towards Ponent cause a bottleneck at the same roundabout. The Catalan Traffic Service installs cones to facilitate the main flow, but this also makes it difficult for vehicles leaving Montblanc to access the AP-2 or the C-14 directly. In fact, some of the drivers who enter the municipality following the navigator end up having to exit back towards the N-240 and make a U-turn further ahead.

According to the mayor, blocking this route on navigators would only be a patch. The definitive solution, according to him, involves building the link between the AP-2 and the A-27, a work of about six kilometers that will allow the direct connection of the two roads through the Coll de Lilla and decongest the roundabout. Vinya regrets that, even though the Spanish government considers this infrastructure a priority, its execution may still take at least four years.
