AstraZeneca vaccine safe, says European Medicines Agency

BarcelonaThe autopsy of the Marbella teacher who died after suffering a stroke two weeks after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine against the coronavirus has ruled out, for now, the relationship between the injection and the stroke, as advanced by the local newspaper the local newspaper Sur, which cites medical sources.

The woman, who was 43, seems to have had a genetic predisposition, and the analysis of the body has not detected clots. Instead, it indicates that the hemorrhage that caused her death would have been caused by an aneurysm, the rupture of a cerebral vein that would have caused massive blood loss.

The victim's family had requested an autopsy to determine if her death was related to the AstraZeneca vaccine. The woman had gone to the doctor three times with severe headaches and was always discharged when the symptoms were linked to the vaccine, and although she continued to have pain she returned to school. Last Sunday, however, she returned to the hospital with a brain haemorrhage. The next day she underwent surgery to try to drain the blood, but died on Tuesday in the ICU of a hospital in the city of Malaga.

The case of the teacher from Marbella, along with other similar cases that have been detected in a dozen countries of the European Union, led several governments to stop the dispensation of the vaccine until the results of the evaluation of the European Medicines Agency, which yesterday gave the green light to the resumption of the campaign ensuring that it is a "safe and effective" serum. Despite this message of tranquility, Spain has decided to wait until next Wednesday to take a decision on whether to extend the vaccine's age limit to 65 years, instead of the current 55, to accelerate the speed of immunization with full guarantees, as requested, for example, by the Catalan Department of Health.
