Railway crisis

Commuter rail service is not returning to normal: a new week begins with several sections by road.

Work continues at 31 points on the network, where there will be alternative road transport.

BarcelonaThe Catalan government had promised "normality," but that won't be the case. The commuter rail service begins another week operating at half capacity and has announced that it will guarantee "mobility on all lines" this Monday, but will again do so with alternative road services at various points and over a hundred speed restrictions for safety reasons. The fact is that Adif (Spain's railway infrastructure manager) personnel are still working at 31 points across the network, spread across all lines, and cannot guarantee that service will be back to normal this Monday. However, Renfe, the train operator, promises that mobility will be guaranteed "with the services that are running, those that are reopening, and with alternative transport plans." The company's spokesperson in Catalonia, Antonio Carmona, appeared before the media again early Monday morning: "We want to provide certainty," Carmona said, "and the first certainty is that mobility is guaranteed, whether by train or road. The second is that we, Renfe and Adif, continue working to gradually restore normality."

Thus, this Monday the situation from last week will be repeated: alternative transport plans will be by road on those sections where trains cannot run due to Adif's work on the railway infrastructure. Starting this Monday, however, Cercanías (commuter rail) will resume train service on the R11 line between Figueres and Portbou. Conversely, the lines that will maintain some sections with alternative road transport are the R1, RG1, R3, R4, R7, R8, RL4, R13, R14, R15, and RT1.

These infrastructure works are primarily focused on protecting slopes and trenches. Adif personnel are also working on track repairs in areas where damage has been necessary. In a statement released this Sunday, the rail infrastructure manager announced that "depending on the progress of the work, the infrastructure will be made available to the service provider and the operator for a gradual return to normal service." Adif also specified that the works are being coordinated with the Catalan government (Generalitat), Renfe, and train drivers. The list of 31 projects is not the same as the one previously in effect, as some work has been completed and new projects have been added. Adif attributes the damage to the recent storms that have affected Catalonia and assures that it is working to gradually restore service and minimize the risk of further disruptions. So far, Adif has already carried out more than 400 inspections across the rail network as part of the emergency plan. The inspections carried out have focused primarily on the sections of track closest to the coast and on lines with a greater presence of slopesFollowing these inspections, Adif has established four levels of intervention to prioritize urgent actions. To carry out these inspections and the necessary work, Adif has deployed approximately fifty teams and some 400 technicians and operators, in addition to specialized machinery. At the same time, the company has reinforced continuous monitoring to detect potential risks and implement preventive measures. such as reducing speed in some sections.
