Yolanda Díaz on Junts: "It has always been a classist and racist party"
Puigdemont explodes against the Spanish vice president, who was the first to go see him in Brussels when Pedro Sánchez had to be invested
Madrid"Racist and classist", thus has been how the Spanish vice president, Yolanda Díaz, of the Sumar space, has described Junts per Catalunya, with whom they agreed to the investiture of the Spanish president, Pedro Sánchez. Díaz has argued that she "knows very well" who Carles Puigdemont's party is and has asserted that "in her life she has never defined Junts as progressive". This accusation, made in an interview with Onda Cero, comes amid a clash with the Junts members over housing measures, as Sumar wants the group led by Míriam Nogueras to validate the decree-law approved by the council of ministers in the package of measures for the war in Iran that extends rental contracts. Support that Puigdemont's party refuses to give her because they do not agree with the measure and because they have presented an alternative that involves lowering taxes (deductions for tenants and owners). The vote is to take place in Congress on April 28 and Sumar has begun a round of contacts to gain support, which has started on the wrong foot.
Díaz's words have angered Puigdemont. In a tweet on X, he said: "The level of moral baseness reached by those who consider themselves morally superior is chilling." For the former president and leader of Junts, Díaz shows "a lack of rigor" and believes he "manipulates like Donald Trump does." "Since he doesn't like what we vote for and what we defend in the Spanish Congress, he reacts by insulting us instead of refuting us. Which is what populists do," Puigdemont stated.
The issue is that Díaz was the first Spanish leader who, following the results of the 2023 Spanish elections, went to see Puigdemont in Brussels to thaw relations and ask for votes for Pedro Sánchez. A relationship that started well, but has ended up becoming a constant clash this legislature due to ideological differences between the two parties. "Good luck. Next time, she should ask the PP for votes to be vice-president and perhaps live better," the former president ended up remarking to Díaz. The head of Puigdemont's cabinet, who was involved in the meeting they had with Yolanda Díaz in the European Parliament, also commented. "Do you know how we know Yolanda Díaz? From when she came to grovel in the European Parliament alongside Ernest Urtasun and Jaume Asens to ask for Junts' vote for her failed Spanish government," tweeted Josep Lluís Alay. Almost three years after the agreement to invest Pedro Sánchez, relations between the partners of the plurinational majority are increasingly deteriorated.
