BarcelonaFormer Minister of Equality and Feminism Tània Verge is leaving her seat in the Catalan Parliament. She will do so after the plenary session in the last week of January. "I've always understood the move into politics as a round trip. My home is the university and activism," she explained in an interview on RTVE. The current ERC deputy, a professor of political science at Pompeu Fabra University, will return to her academic life at the university. Verge assumed the portfolio of Equality and Feminism during Pere Aragonès's government, which began in 2021 with the goal of advancing four revolutions: the social, the feminist, the green, and the democratic. As Catalonia's first Minister of Equality and Feminism, Verge aimed to ensure that feminism reached the entire government and permeated society. One of the ways she did this was by promoting inclusive language. totis —as an alternative to the masculine 'everyone' and the feminine 'all'— or speaking of menstruating people —to avoid calling women those who do not identify with the female gender— were some of the concepts introduced by the Republican executive.

One of the campaigns that had the greatest impact during her three years as a council member was the My rulesThe initiative aimed to combat period poverty and involved distributing free menstrual cups and underwear to pharmacies. Verge also promoted specialized 24-hour psychological services for victims of gender-based violence, and proposed a service to address digital violence, although she didn't have time to implement it.

The now-former ERC deputy was on the party's list in the May 2024 elections. In fact, Virgen had joined Pere Aragonès's government as an independent, but in May 2024 she became a member of ERC, in the midst of the Catalan election campaign on May 12. In this morning's interview, Verge explained that after her time as a minister, she decided to continue her political career as a deputy to contribute, from Parliament, to completing the initiatives she had launched in her department. Now, however, she believes her time in institutional politics has come to an end. Nevertheless, he welcomed Parliament's approval in December of the new law to combat LGBTI-phobia, but lamented that the current government has shelved the anti-racism law.

In 2017, Virgen was also one of the members of the October 1st Electoral Board who was tried in this case. The judge acquitted them, but later ordered a retrial after the Public Prosecutor's Office requested it. The trial has not yet taken place, and the five board members should have been eligible for amnesty, although they are still waiting due to obstacles being placed by the State's high courts. During the crisis that Esquerra suffered a year ago, the former councilor joined the alternative list to Oriol Junqueras, headed by Xavier Godàs, New National Left. She was also one of the signatories of the manifesto in June 2024 that called for a step towards joining the current leader of the Republicans. Alba Camps is next on the ERC list and will replace the current Republican deputy in the Catalan Parliament. Camps, who was a member of parliament during the previous legislature, was Xavier Godàs's running mate in the primaries a year ago. After Virgen announced her decision to leave institutional politics, Junqueras tweeted his thanks for her work so far: "Thank you for bringing the tireless struggle of the streets to the institutions."
