Abascal and his "good friend" Milei meet in Madrid

The Argentine president takes a photo with a frog from the state oil company YPF in the midst of an energy crisis

MadridThe President of Argentina, Javier Milei, will spend just over 24 hours in Madrid this weekend. The reason for his express trip to the Spanish capital is the "dissertation" he will give this Saturday evening at the second edition of the Madrid Economic Forum, which is being held this Saturday at the Palacio de Vistalegre and is an ode to the wildest capitalism. But before his speech, Milei has taken the opportunity to meet behind closed doors with various figures from the most liberal and ultra-conservative Spanish economic and political sphere, among whom the leader of Vox, Santiago Abascal, stands out.

"It is always a pleasure to meet with my good friend and ally Javier Milei – the Vox leader stated through a message on the social network X–. An international benchmark of freedom who has returned Argentina to the path of prosperity and to the league of great nations," added Abascal. These words were accompanied by a photo in which he is seen with the Argentine president, who is wearing a work jumpsuit from the Argentine oil company YPF.

The meeting between the two political leaders was held in a Madrid hotel this Saturday morning and lasted just over an hour. The only reaction after the meeting was through social networks.

However, Milei's decision to wear a work jumpsuit with the YPF initials does not come at any random time, but rather in the midst of an energy crisis due to the war in the Middle East and tensions over the supply and price of oil and gas. With this reference to the oil company, Milei boasts about a sector that is experiencing a moment of effervescence in Argentina (the country is a net exporter of crude oil), not only because of the Argentine president's commitment to hydrocarbons, but also because he has withdrawn from all climate negotiations.

According to the agenda distributed by Milei's team, the Argentine president is not scheduled to meet with official authorities, nor with Spanish businessmen. In fact, in none of the trips Milei has made to Spain since he became president of Argentina has he met with Pedro Sánchez, against whom he has not hesitated to attack on repeated occasions. Last September, he planned to come to Spain and meet with Abascal, but the trip was suspended due to the electoral defeat of his candidate in Buenos Aires. His last visit was in 2024. On one occasion he met with Isabel Díaz Ayuso, but also with Spanish businessmen and executives.

This Saturday, after the meeting with Abascal, Milei met with economics professor Jesús Huerta de Soto, founder of the Master's in Economics of the Austrian School, a benchmark for Javier Milei and the ultra-liberal world. He also met with Jazztel founder Martín Varsavsky and his partner, Nina Varsavsky.

Young ultraliberals

The Madrid Economic Forum was born in Andorra and moved to Madrid in 2025. Milei, in fact, was already part of the lineup in its first edition. Among other things, the event advocates for a secondary role of the state in the economy, and also makes a firm commitment to tax reduction, as well as to ultra-liberal policies. All this in front of hundreds of young people who will have paid between 50 and 2,500 euros to attend the event, as can be seen from the official website.
