It never fails. You sit at your front door and watch PP defendants march past on their way to court. Now it's Cristóbal Montoro's turn, for bribery, fraud against the public administration, malfeasance, influence peddling, prohibited negotiations, corruption in business, and falsification of documents. They're not just about to be convicted.
We remember Montoro from his proud declaration: "I don't know with what money those Chinese ballot boxes were paid, nor was Puigdemont's upkeep, but I know it wasn't with public money," a thesis he repeated in Parliament, only to have the judge dismiss the minister's version. Later, during the Proceso trial, Montoro changed his story. He was proposed as a witness by the Vox private prosecution and stated that if public officials from the Generalitat had opened public buildings to hold an illegal event, that constituted embezzlement. His thesis was so solid that even Judge Marchena asked him to refrain from classifying crimes and limit himself to answering.
Montoro is now under investigation for using the Treasury to traffic in laws. If he ends up proving it, it would be so serious that it would not only end his reputation, but would also throw another shovelful of corruption on a saturated public morality. We also saw his predecessor, Rodrigo Rato, pass through, but on his way to prison, through the black cards of Caja Madrid, and less than a year ago he was convicted of crimes against the Public Treasury, money laundering, and corruption between individuals. What great signings by Aznar.
