In Nazi Germany, concentration camps were referred to using euphemisms such as repatriation centers, labor camps, labor colonies either traffic zones. Also area of interestThe area that included the Auschwitz and Birkenau camps, also called Auschwitz II, was known as the Gulag. In the Soviet Union, the gulags were not referred to by that name either. Instead of concentration campsThey also resorted to mitigations such as work colonies either correction fields. And there were even camps for children, and for mothers with children.
Now, the European Union has given the green light to the creation of deportation camps for immigrants outside the EU's borders, following the example of those established by Giorgia Meloni in Albania. The Italian experience has been largely unsuccessful, but the proposal has nevertheless enjoyed unusual success in Brussels, and in fact Spain stood alone in opposing it (that doesn't mean, let's be clear, that it won't implement it later). It's not that the expression deportation camp It works too well as a euphemism, because it's quite sinister in itself, but it's still a way of avoiding saying concentration campThis is precisely what all indications suggest these types of facilities will truly be. The initiative for their creation, as well as the terms and conditions—economic ones—with the third countries where they are built, are left to the discretion of each member state, with a series of common requirements that, upon reading them, seem more like threats than guarantees. The stipulations that human rights must be respected in these camps, that no one should be at risk because of their race, sex, or religion, or that those detained will receive education, healthcare, and decent housing, seem almost sarcastic, further cementing this regression toward the worst moments of recent European history. This is especially true given that Europe already has a repressive and violent migration policy, with massacres like those in Tarajal and Melilla in its recent history, and agreements with countries that blatantly disregard human rights, such as Tunisia, Libya, and Morocco.
To put it even more plainly, the EU will create—outside its borders, where little is seen—prisons for the poorest, the most destitute, those who will hardly have anyone to defend them. They may also be detained not temporarily, but indefinitely: this is a way of saying that the opacity and cover-up of any abuses committed will be virtually total. At the same time, we have seen Chancellor Friedrich Merz align himself with Netanyahu with his visit to Israel. This drift of the EU adds to the New Security Strategy of the US designed by Trump, which basically consists of applying the slogan America First in global geostrategy. As Arizona Senator and former military officer Mark Kelly tweeted, Trump's worldview is one of winners and losers. He, obviously, is the main winner, and Europe a loser that, moreover, seems determined to behave as such.
