Coldplay's Chris Martin reveals he suffers from depression and gives tips for managing it.
The singer told this from Hong Kong, where the British group performed this week.

BarcelonaChris Martin, vocalist and frontman of Coldplay, has shared with his fans that, despite his band's fame and success, he struggles with mental health issues. Specifically, in a video posted on Coldplay's social media, the singer says he's recently struggled with depression and explains some of the things he does to manage it. "I've noticed a number of people, myself included, are dealing with depression," he says in a video recorded from a street in Hong Kong. Martin continues the message by listing the things that make him "grateful and happy to be alive."
One of the resources the singer uses to manage depression is "freewriting." "You write down all your thoughts for twelve minutes and then you apply creams and strips. This is really good. Transcendental meditation has also been really wonderful for me," he explains. "There's another thing called proprioception, which is a kind of body movement that helps balance the brain. There's a method called Costello, which is very helpful, especially for young people with ADHD, autism, and things like that. Johns Hopkins music is really good music for therapy; it's psychedelic and incredible." According to the singer, art, specifically music and film, has also helped him with depression. Martin ends the message by wishing his followers "lots of love."
Martin is a huge advocate for raising awareness about mental health issues. During his marriage, he supported Gwyneth Paltrow through the postpartum depression she suffered after the birth of her second son, Moses. The actress herself explained that it was her then-husband who identified that she was experiencing depression. "Four months after giving birth, Chris came to me and said, 'There's something wrong.» and I told him «No, no, I'm fine». But Chris identified it, and that burst the bubble," Paltrow explained in the magazine Good Housekeeping The Coldplay frontman's current partner, actress Dakota Johnson, has suffered from bouts of depression since she was 15. At an event for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation, she explained how her boyfriend helped her manage the illness. At the time, she revealed that one of the things that helps her the most is Martin's sense of humor, as well as therapy, meditation, breathing exercises, and being outdoors.
