Meeting of 'therians': few animals and many beasts

People in costumes making fun of each other in Barcelona where the 'Therians' meeting was taking place

I read about the five people arrested for disturbances at a meeting of therians in Barcelona, these people who feel a deep connection with an animal, which drives them to disguise themselves and imitate its behavior. The chronicles explain that there were very few members of this urban tribe, and that most of those gathered at the Arc de Triomf - about a hundred - were curious onlookers and, some, violent individuals ready to mock them and throw them animal feed. It is worth asking what role the media and, above all, social networks play in the emergence of both phenomena.

Regarding the therians, there is little to say, beyond the obvious fact that it is one of the new identities that the TikTok generation is exploring. There have always been eccentrics, and the previous generation used to limit themselves to looking at them with a bit of disdain and saying something like "as long as they don't do drugs...". What is new is that the same networks that provide them with the comfort of belonging to a group - I can't imagine anyone meowing on all fours and chasing a ball of wool down the hallway if not to share it - are the ones that then facilitate another group gathering to make their lives impossible. It is the umpteenth demonstration that networks intrinsically favor the far-right. The different will always be the minority that will be licked in the cruel game of polarization. Today it has been the therians's turn, but it is worth asking if tomorrow these aggressors will be stoning immigrants, feminists, homosexuals, or any other group that brandishes an identity that makes them uncomfortable. I don't expect anything from social networks, but the media should be aware of their role and responsibility when it comes to overstating presumed viral phenomena that, in the end, and pardon the pun, gather a handful of people.
