Dinner as the sun sets: restaurants and wineries preparing special menus for the great eclipse

The great astronomical event has become an opportunity to get together, celebrate and go out for a well-paired meal

It doesn't happen very often that dinner time depends on the movements of the sun and the moon. In fact, a great eclipse like the one that is about to happen in our country is not at all common: it is the first in more than a century. For this reason, on August 12, some tables in Catalonia will have more reasons than ever to look towards the sky instead of focusing only on the plate. Restaurants, wineries and hotels have prepared dinners, appetizers, tastings and cocktails conceived around the solar eclipse that will cross the Iberian Peninsula that afternoon. In fact, this combination has turned viewpoints, vineyards, terraces and open spaces into some of the most sought-after places to experience the phenomenon, and gastronomy has joined in with an offer ranging from a tomato bread appetizer and Empordà wine to tasting menus with a Michelin star.

Les Moles: gastronomic dinner, a quarry and more than twenty musicians

In Ulldecona, in the zero zone of the eclipse, Les Moles is preparing one of the most elaborate offerings of the night. The one-star restaurant has named the experience Nit Eclíptica and has created a special evening for August 12th where gastronomy, astronomy, and music will advance to the rhythm of the phenomenon. The night will begin with a welcome aperitif before attendees go up to the quarry located at the highest point of the estate, more than 250 meters above sea level, from where the eclipse is expected to be observed. The location is not anecdotal: with the Sun very low during the most anticipated phase of the phenomenon, having an open horizon will be especially important.

Restaurant Les Moles, in Ulldecona, has a Michelin star and is located in ground zero of the eclipse.

The soundtrack has also been taken into account for the occasion. During the evening, the Camerata Bacasis will perform, a formation of more than twenty musicians that combines orchestra, singer, DJ, and musical director. The music will evolve during the different phases of the night, before a light show conceived specifically for the event. After the observation, the table will arrive: Les Moles will serve a gastronomic dinner with dishes inspired by the eclipse (with dishes with names as extravagant as 'Solar Corona' and 'Animal Confusion'), followed by a live concert. In this case, rather than setting a table under the sky, the restaurant has built the entire night around the minutes when the light will begin to change to make the evening unforgettable.

Perelada: cured meats, bread with tomato and wine among the vineyards

In Alt Empordà, Celler Perelada offers a very different experience. Here, it will not be possible to directly contemplate the totality of the eclipse, which does not prevent us from celebrating the astronomical phenomenon that can be partially followed as the moon covers the sun. The 'Eclipse among vineyards' proposal will begin in the afternoon with a visit to the winery. Afterwards, Josep Maria 'Pia' Lagares, an astronomical monitor from the Starlight Foundation, will explain to attendees what they can see and how to do it safely. Afterwards, the approved glasses to follow the phenomenon will be distributed.

And at 7:35 PM, with the eclipse already underway, the aperitif will arrive. A platter of cured meats with bread and tomato, cake, and wines from the winery will be served, presented amidst the vineyards and aromatic plant gardens, accompanied by live music. Even children will be able to have local apple must. It is a gastronomic proposal deliberately linked to the territory because it seeks less astronomical artifice on the plate and more Empordà in the glass and on the table.

Around 8:20 PM, participants will move to the observation area, although from Peralada it will not be possible to see the entire eclipse due to the mountainous terrain and the sun's position on the horizon. It will be possible to see how the moon begins to "bite" the sun and "draw a changing silhouette that will allow us to understand, in real-time, the dynamics of the sun-earth-moon system." Afterwards, the experience will continue in the auditorium with an audiovisual simulation of all phases of the eclipse and explanations by Lagares.

Prades turns the eclipse into a four-day festival

In the Prades Mountains, this evening will be more than just a night. The Prades Mountains Astronomical Park will celebrate the Eclipsi 2026 Festival from August 10 to 13, four days of astronomy, concerts, workshops, planetarium, family activities, and also, gastronomy.

The type of dinner will depend on the chosen package, with various options according to everyone's budget and interests. The Luxe package includes a reserved space to watch the eclipse and concerts, entrance to the shows, and dinner in food truck, as well as a guided observation of the Tears of Saint Lawrence on the night of the 12th. On the other hand, the Prèmium+ package takes a gastronomic step up: it includes a dinner under the stars with a tasting menu themed with astronomical motifs, accompanied by a live concert by Gerard Marsal, as well as reserved spaces during the eclipse and concerts. And at the highest level, the Ultra package, at 450 euros, offers a much more exceptional gastronomic experience: an exclusive dinner under the stars with a tasting menu from La Boscana, a restaurant with two Michelin stars, in the Vega Aixalà vineyards, accompanied by the winery's wines. It also includes a concert by Joan Claver. Beyond the food, the festival will bring together solar observations, activities on astrobiology and space meteorology, workshops for safely viewing the sun, shows, and concerts for four days.

Four days of wine and fine dining in Priorat

Precisely near Prades, Gran Hotel Mas d'en Bruno, in Priorat, has proposed the eclipse as a multi-day getaway. Its Luxury Eclipse & Stargazing Experience program, from August 10 to 14, combines astronomy, gastronomy, and wine tourism in a hotel located within the path of totality.

The program includes guided observations, experiences linked to biodynamic wine, and various special meals. On the 12th, after a show cooking of chef Josep Queralt's rice dishes, participants will travel from the afternoon to a chosen observation point in the Prades Mountains to await the moment of the eclipse. A gastronomic experience linked to a two-Michelin-star restaurant is also planned there. The program has been prepared in collaboration with the Prades Mountains Astronomical Park and a restaurant with this distinction. The days before and after complete the getaway with wine tastings, visits, and gastronomy. It is the longest version of all the proposals: here the phenomenon lasts a few minutes, but the experience lasts four days.

Cocktails in front of the Mediterranean in El Vendrell

However, not all options involve a tasting menu. On the front line of Sant Salvador beach, in El Vendrell, Le Méridien Ra Beach Hotel & Spa proposes to follow the phenomenon from the rooftop from the hotel. The Solar Eclipse Experience will turn the terrace into an observation space with live DJ, cocktails and snacks, a closer option to a summer afternoon by the sea than a formal dinner.

The entrance includes access to the terrace, drinks and appetizers, music, and approved glasses for observing the Sun. In this case, the gastronomic protagonist will not be a menu elaborated around the phenomenon, but a more informal formula: a drink, something to snack on, and an open sea horizon as the light diminishes.

When looking at the sky also changes dinner time

The timing of the eclipse explains a good part of the interest the phenomenon has generated among restaurants and wineries. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), the most spectacular moment will arrive with the sun very low. In different parts of the Peninsula, the maximum will be around 8:30 PM, with variations depending on the location, a perfect time to kick off a gastronomic experience and which can also be enjoyed, obviously, from any point facing the episode. This will practically be the time for a late aperitif or dinner on August 12th. This is why most proposals have opted for a similar scheme: start eating before the eclipse, temporarily interrupt the meal to observe it, and then resume the evening with music, wine, or dinner.

On August 12th, therefore, there will be those who await the eclipse with a telescope and those who do so with a glass of wine or with the sophistication of a dish called Light and darkness of white garlic and black garlic. Some will go up to a quarry, others will sit among vineyards, and a few will end up dining on a Michelin-starred menu under the stars. Many others will celebrate it in different ways: a beer, a gin and tonic, a kiss, a viewpoint. The phenomenon will be the same, but the after-dinner promises thousands of different versions and a lot of posing on social media.
