The United States attacks Iran, which responds with missiles against Kuwait
New weekend of hostilities as details of a deal to extend the ceasefire are discussed
BarcelonaAir strikes between the United States and Iran resumed this weekend as both sides claimed to have hit military targets near the Strait of Hormuz. The United States Central Command (Centcom) reported that it carried out "self-defense strikes against Iranian radars and drone command and control centers in Goruk, Iran, and on Qeshm Island over the weekend." For its part, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) stated that it attacked an air base used by American forces in retaliation, although it did not specify its location. Kuwait has said it is facing an attack with missiles and drones. Previously, according to American media, President Donald Trump had requested "modifications" in the latest version of a proposal that could lead to a peace agreement, with no indication of significant progress.
The United States has stated that Saturday and Sunday's attacks were a response to "Iranian aggressive actions that included the downing of a U.S. MQ-1 drone operating in international waters." In a post on X, Centcom indicated that U.S. fighter jets attacked Iranian anti-aircraft defenses, a ground control station, and two drones that, it claimed, "posed a clear threat to ships transiting the region's waters." The Revolutionary Guard explained that it attacked the airbase that the United States had used to carry out bombings against its communications tower on Sirri Island, in the Persian Gulf, located about 65 kilometers from the southern coast of Iran.
The Iranian army added that its response would be "completely different" if the U.S. aggression were repeated, in statements collected by the semi-official Iranian agency Fars. Tehran attacked an airbase in Kuwait last week in response to previous U.S. bombings, which, according to Washington, were carried out to prevent Iranian vessels and missile attacks from mining the shipping lane.
After the ceasefire that came into effect on April 8, Donald Trump has repeatedly maintained that the United States and Iran were close to a permanent agreement and that negotiations were advancing, but so far no formal pact has been reached. The latest draft included a 60-day truce, a call to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and a framework to resume negotiations on Iran's nuclear program, according to American media. Approximately one-fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) traffic circulated through this maritime corridor in the Persian Gulf, until Iran closed it in response to the joint attack by the United States and Israel.
More executions
On the other hand, Iran has executed two men convicted for their role in the anti-government protests in January, according to the Mizan agency. The two men have been found guilty of setting fire to a mosque, damaging public property, and confronting security forces. Both death sentences were ratified by the Supreme Court before being carried out. The protests in Iran over the country's economic conditions broke out in late December and eventually became a broader challenge to the clerical regime that has ruled the country since the Islamic Revolution of 1979.
