The bizarre case of a Spanish soldier expelled from NATO for his relationship with an alleged Russian spy

A Spanish Navy officer has been expelled from a NATO base due to his relationship with a suspected Russian spy. According to The Telegraph, the British media outlet that broke the news, the military officer had been stationed at the Atlantic Alliance base in Northwood, northwest of London, to work at the headquarters of the Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM). A few months ago, however, NATO suspended him from his post and forced him to return to Spain after initiating an investigation for allegedly having been in contact with Russian espionage.

Specifically, the Atlantic Alliance suspected the officer's relationship, which began in 2024 via Tinder, with a woman of dual British and Polish nationality and originally from Russia. The NATO investigation maintained that the woman could be in contact with Russian espionage, and that she had approached the officer to learn about the Alliance's inner workings from the inside. In fact, according to The Telegraph, the woman managed to enter the base as the officer's guest during a Christmas party.

Sources from the Spanish army consulted by the Efe agency have described the events as an "isolated incident," and have assured that the military officer remains on active duty although they have not detailed his new assignment.

For its part, the spokesperson for the NATO maritime command where the officer worked explained to Efe that "MARCOM does not make statements regarding personnel-related issues." "NATO maintains its full commitment to the protection of allied personnel, the protection of classified information, and the maintenance of the trust and security upon which the Alliance depends," he concluded.
