The protest is in response to the social unrest generated by a corruption scandal directly involving the president and his sister, Karina Milei, who is his main confidant and also serves as Secretary General of the Argentine Presidency, as well as other political leaders in the populist leader's inner circle. A series of audio recordings published on August 20 in local media reveal an alleged bribery scheme in the state purchase of medicines for the disabled. The main perpetrator is Eduardo, Undersecretary of Institutional Management of the General Secretariat of the Presidency. Lule Menem, cousin of the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies, Martín Menem. Karina Milei is accused of being the recipient of the 3% commission that the Argentine government paid to the pharmaceutical company Suizo Argentina in exchange for drugs intended for assistance programs for people with various chronic conditions.

Hours after the leak of the recordings, the president decided to "preemptively" remove the director of the National Agency for Disability, Diego Spagnuolo, who is also one of Milei's personal lawyers. A few hours after the release of the audio recordings, a lawyer filed a complaint, which includes the president and his sister, for bribery, fraudulent administration, negotiations incompatible with the exercise of public functions, and violation of the Public Ethics Law.

Following the suspicions, Milei's popularity has plummeted in the polls, just weeks before the Buenos Aires provincial and Senate elections. After days of silence from the Argentine government regarding the accusations, the president has spoken out for the first time in recent hours, stating that "everything she says is a lie" and announcing that he will prove in court that it was all a setup.
