At least two dead in a shooting at the pyramids of Teotihuacan, in Mexico
A man has opened fire on tourists and committed suicide
BarcelonaA man shot at tourists visiting the Pyramid of the Moon, in Teotihuacan, a popular tourist and archaeological site on the outskirts of Mexico City, on Monday. The shootings killed a woman of Canadian nationality and left six more people injured, according to local media. After opening fire, the attacker allegedly committed suicide, according to the Security Cabinet.
"According to preliminary information, a man shot at the scene and subsequently took his own life. Unfortunately, a woman of Canadian nationality has lost her life," Mexican authorities stated in a message on social media. According to the information, several people were injured but are already receiving medical attention at the scene.
The attack took place this midday, at the northern end of the architectural complex, when a man climbed the Pyramid of the Moon, the second largest in Teotihuacan —43 meters high—, and opened fire from the top. In videos disseminated through social networks, the alleged attacker can be seen at the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. A woman shouts "call the police," while tourists, some foreigners, hastily abandon the place amidst scenes of confusion.
President Claudia Sheinbaum lamented the events in a message on X and expressed her solidarity with the victims' families. She affirms that personnel from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Culture are heading to the scene to provide attention and support. "I am attentive and will continue to inform punctually through the Security Cabinet," she declared.
The Security Cabinet reported that, after shots were registered in the archaeological zone of Teotihuacan, a coordinated operation has been deployed with the Secretariat of Security of the State of Mexico and the National Guard to address the situation.
