At least one dead and several seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Berlin during Pride
The police are searching in the center of the German capital for the suspect, who has fled
BarcelonaAt least one person has died and 15 more have been injured —some seriously— this Saturday during the LGBTI Pride Day festival in a multiple hit-and-run in Berlin. After driving the vehicle towards the celebrations, the driver fled.
"Around 10:00 p.m., a car entered the Tiergarten [park] from Lennéstrasse and injured several people," a police spokesperson explained to the media, who also confirmed the number of victims. The German newspaper Bild quotes a witness who assures that a white van rammed the crowd at high speed and that a man got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
The police have launched a search operation for the suspect and have asked the public to avoid the area, in the center of the German capital. They also reported that the injured are being attended to by emergency services near Tiergarten Park, where the incident took place.
The events have forced the cancellation of the annual pride event. The annual Berlin Pride march, also known as Christopher Street Day, attracts hundreds of thousands of people who demonstrate and celebrate the rights of queer communities. It is the largest in a series of similar events across Germany.
