BarcelonaThe United States has reactivated attacks against Iran. Since Wednesday morning and in two waves of attacks – one yesterday, and another this Thursday morning – the missiles of the United States army have impacted 170 Iranian targets, with a toll so far of 14 dead and 78 injured, according to data from the Iranian Ministry of Health. In this way, Washington makes effective the announcement that Donald Trump verbalized on Wednesday, who in statements to the press from the NATO summit in Ankara assured that the truce with Iran had "ended"ended". The United States president stated this after the country's army had already attacked Iran hours before, and announced new attacks for this morning. The United States army has fulfilled Trump's threat and has attacked again.

The objective of this new aggression by Washington is to "reduce" Iran's capacity "to threaten navigation" through the Strait of Hormuz, after several attacks against commercial ships in the Persian Gulf were reported between Monday and Tuesday. In recent months, the United States has already attacked Iranian targets. There have been missile launches, especially towards ships, although in a much smaller proportion than in recent hours. The last significant escalation was in May, when a series of attacks threatened to break the ceasefire. But now the bombings not only put the truce at risk, but also the agreement signed in June that is intended to achieve lasting peace between the two sides.

In response to the missile launches in recent hours, Iran has attacked two United States bases in Kuwait and one in Bahrain, as well as a United States target in Qatar. Tehran has made it clear that bombings against United States positions will continue if Washington opens fire again. "I said it clearly: if [the US] strike, they will receive another blow in response," wrote the speaker of the Iranian parliament and one of the main negotiators with the United States, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, on X this morning. Regarding Hormuz, Qalibaf was clear: "The strait will only be opened with Iranian agreements, and not with United States threats".

Within Iran, attacks by the United States have forced the suspension of trains between Tehran and Mashhad, the holy city near the border with Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. After almost a week of funerals throughout the country and Iraq, this Thursday the supreme leader Ali Khamenei, who died in the Washington and Tel Aviv attacks on February 28, is scheduled to be buried in this locality. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has assured that one of the US attacks was directed against two bridges in eastern Iran leading to the city of Mashhad, "in an attempt to overshadow the farewell ceremony of the martyred leader".

Talks could continue

Despite the truce's breakdown announced yesterday by the New York tycoon, talks between the United States and Iran could continue. Trump himself assured that Washington is not seeking "a long-term conflict," and stated that any new escalation "will end very quickly." Regarding the negotiation, the leader said that dealing with Iran "is simply a waste of time." In the same intervention, however, he left the door open to continue talking with Tehran: "I will let our wonderful negotiators continue talking if they want, but I don't see it.

As follows, the cross attacks render the first point useless from the memorandum of understanding signed on June 17 by Trump himself and the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian. This section establishes the "immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts", and also makes it clear that both parties commit "to not initiating any war or any military operation against each other", as well as to "mutually refrain from the threat or use of force".
