The DO Cava completes the new plenary of its regulatory council, the body that will elect the next president

This Friday, the sparkling wine organization has finished defining who the 12 members will be that will form part of the plenary of its regulatory council, the body that represents the different agents of the sector and that will be responsible for designating who will occupy the position of maximum responsibility within the designation of origin for the next four years. The decision is expected to be made on June 11, once the month for submitting candidacies, which will open next week, has ended.

Of the 12 seats that make up the plenary of the regulatory council, only three remained to be defined, as the remaining nine came from consensual candidacies. The seats pending assignment corresponded to the representatives of the winegrowers not affiliated with cooperatives, who during Thursday held an election to decide who would occupy the last places.

and for the fears of various winemakers of a Beyond the representatives of the winegrowers not affiliated with cooperatives, the rest of the DO Cava regulatory council will be formed as follows: the representatives of the cooperative winegrowers will be Enric Ferré Ginovart and Miquel Lleixa Masana, both belonging to the Federation of Agrarian Cooperatives of Catalonia. As the sole member representing the base wine-producing wineries, the Centre Vinícola del Penedès (Cevipe Grup Cooperatiu SCCL) appears, representing the entity of the Federation of Agrarian Cooperatives of Catalonia. And in the most relevant part, corresponding to the representatives of the producing wineries, the six seats have also been distributed by consensus. These will be occupied by the Freixenet, García Carrión, Codorníu, Pere Ventura i Família, Bodegues Sumarroca, and Viña Torreblanca groups.

In the statement released this Friday after the election results, the DO defends that the new plenary represents "the diversity" of the territory and that the electoral process aims to "guarantee the balance and parity between the interests of the processing and producing sectors.

With more than 70% of international sales, Cava is one of the Spanish DOs that exports the most and brings together around 38,000 hectares of vineyards, some 6,200 winegrowers, and a total of 349 associated wineries. The last few months at the DO, however, have also been marked by the departure of Juvé & Camps to Corpinnat and by the fears of various winegrowers of a reduction in production within the territory by large groups.
