BarcelonaAs expected, prices have picked up again during the month of June, increasing the cost of living by 0.8% in Catalonia compared to May. The prices of goods and services have accelerated their growth across Spain, rising by 0.6%, coinciding with the end of tax reductions on electricity and gas approved by the Spanish government to mitigate the effects of the war in Iran.

According to the consumer price index (CPI) published this Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), the increase in the cost of living for families has risen six tenths more between May and June than it did between April and May, when it grew by 0.2% in Catalonia. Compared to a year ago, prices have increased by 3.2% in Catalonia, the same as in Spain as a whole, where the figure coincides with the evolution of prices in May compared to the same month in 2025. In both cases, the inflation rate is higher than the cost of living increase target set by the European Central Bank (ECB) in the medium and long term: it aims for it to be around 2%.

The new INE data confirm the forecasts made by this public body on the last day of June, when, for Spain as a whole, it indicated a monthly price increase of 0.6% and an annual increase of 3.2%. The products that have become most expensive across Spain are electricity and gas, precisely because they once again include the taxes that the Spanish government waived with the outbreak of the war in Iran. In contrast, the cost of transport has fallen by 1.3% due to continued fuel subsidies. And leisure has risen by 1.9%, according to the INE, due to the cost of tourist packages.

A couple of weeks ago, the government led by Pedro Sánchez decided to maintain some of the measures until September 30 considering that, despite the moderation of inflation, it is not enough to withdraw them all.
