Oil, perfumes and underwear: these are the most frequently stolen products in stores
Businesses in the state lose 2.8 billion euros annually due to theft, administrative errors and supplier fraud
BarcelonaOlive oil, perfumes, headphones, light bulbs, and underwear are the most frequently stolen items in Spanish stores, according to a study by the retail consultancy NIQ for the anti-theft device manufacturer Checkpoint Systems and Aecoc, the national association of large companies in the distribution sector. In total, stores in Spain lose €2.917 billion annually to so-called shrinkage, which includes shoplifting, supplier fraud, and administrative errors. This figure represents approximately 1.1% of the sector's revenue, according to the report. On average, each theft involves items valued at €195.58, although 83% of thefts involve products worth less than €150. 65% of thefts are committed by occasional customers, while 35% are coordinated actions by organized gangs for profit. These gangs typically steal high-value products for resale and "pose a major problem for the security of establishments," the study adds.

Olive oil tops the ranking for the second year This is the most frequently stolen product in Spain in recent years, due to the increased price of this food item caused by poor harvests in producing regions such as Catalonia and Andalusia. In the food and beverage category, thefts of canned goods, smoked products, sausages, and cheeses are also prominent. Wines and spirits, which traditionally were the most stolen items until the rising cost of living led to a surge in thefts of other goods, are now less common. In the personal care category, perfumes and colognes are once again the most stolen product, followed by sunscreens and razor blades. Makeup also appears among the most frequently stolen items. The report also indicates that underwear, footwear, and lingerie are the most stolen items in fashion stores, followed by t-shirts, shirts and blouses, coats, jackets, and handbags.
In the technology sector, 67% of companies say that headphones are the most stolen product, ahead of... smartphonesLaptops, chargers, and video games are among the most frequently stolen items. The report also highlights the increase in smartwatch thefts. In the DIY sector, light bulbs top the list, followed by batteries, tools, cutlery, and dishes. The study also notes the rise in pet product thefts, such as accessories, due to the significant increase in the number of households with pets.
