€26,830 million: Environmental taxes in Spain now represent 7% of all taxes

Energy leads the way in 'green' taxes, accounting for 80% of the total.

BarcelonaEnvironmental taxes collected in Spain increased by 8.9% in 2024, reaching a total of €26.83 billion, according to data published Tuesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). These taxes now account for 7% of total taxes collected in the Spanish economy, one-tenth of a percentage point higher than the previous year. Of all environmental taxes, 40% – €10.83 billion – was paid by households, according to INE data. This figure is 9% higher than the previous year. By type, households paid 72.4% of transport taxes and 39.7% of energy taxes.

Productive sectors paid 59.7% of total environmental taxes. By type, they paid almost all pollution and resource taxes (99%) and 60.3% of energy taxes. Among all sectors, the manufacturing industry (20.1% of the total) and the supply of electricity, gas, steam, and water (15.1%) paid the most. The extractive industries and agriculture, livestock, forestry, and fishing paid the least (0.5% and 1% of the total, respectively).

Energy taxes (79.5%) constituted the majority of environmental taxes in 2024. In comparison, transportation taxes reached 12%, and pollution and resource taxes, 8.5%.

36% more in five years

In this respect, the figures reflect that energy taxes increased by 10% compared to 2023. Taxes on pollution and resources increased by 6.2%, and those applied to transport by 3.7%. Energy taxes reached €16.987 billion, 16.1% more than the previous year. Green taxation has continued to grow in recent years. Thus, in 2008 these taxes generated €18.179 billion. But the most pronounced growth has occurred in the last five years. In 2020, environmental taxes raised €19.697 billion, while in 2024 they reached €26.830 billion, representing a 36% increase in five years.
