This Friday in Milan, at least two people died and 40 were injured when a tram derailed and crashed into a building near the city center. The incident, which prompted the mobilization of five fire units, occurred around 4 p.m. on Vittorio Veneto Street, as the tram was traveling from Piazza della Repubblica toward Porta Venezia. Six of the injured are in serious condition, while the rest sustained minor injuries.

The tram belongs to the line that runs through the center of Milan from the central train station to Porta Genova station. Some witnesses told the media that they saw the public transport vehicle approaching at high speed before crashing into the building. According to local press reports, one of the deceased is a man in his sixties who was run over by the tram. The other is a homeless man whom the authorities are trying to identify. Milan's public prosecutor, Marcello Viola, has arrived at the scene and will open an investigation in the coming hours for manslaughter and negligent injury in order to clarify what happened, the media add.
