BarcelonaCanadian actress Carrie-Anne Moss became known around the world for her role as Trinity in the Matrix saga. The performer is promoting her latest project, the mystery series Yaga (HBO Max), and during interviews with different media outlets she has recalled her close bond with Catalonia and, more specifically, with Sitges. Before dedicating herself to acting, Moss worked as a model and it was during that period that she settled in the Garraf municipality. The actress, 59, claims that Sitges is one of her favorite places in the world.
"I lived in Barcelona. Well, actually I lived in Sitges. It was one of the most interesting stages of my life –she recalls in an interview with Fotogramas–. I worked there as a model and one day, while I was living in Sitges—where all the models lived—, an opportunity for an audition came up. We used to take the train to go to work and go to the auditions. That was how I got a screen test for an American television series called Dark Justice", she explains. The series, filmed in English, was a production between the American network CBS and TV3, which aired it in the early 90s. Although the fiction was set in the United States, the first season was filmed entirely in Catalonia, mainly in Barcelona and in Vilassar de Mar, in the Maresme. The beaches of the Catalan coast were made to look like the beaches of Malibu. With the second season, the filming was moved to the United States and Moss had to leave Catalonia.
"They were looking for a girl from the United States. I went to the audition and thought: 'Oh my God! I'm Canadian... they'll surely notice.' I tried to change my way of speaking a little, since back then I had a very strong Canadian accent. And I got the role; it was my first job as an actress. I filmed a full season in Barcelona and, afterwards, a second season in Los Angeles," she explains.
Dark Justice was the gateway to acting for Moss, who assures that when she started filming the series she knew absolutely nothing about the craft. "I was unaware of even technical concepts, such as standing on a mark on set. The lead actor and I used to go home together by car, and he would always ask me: 'What did you learn today?'. I lived in Spain for more than a year. First I was in Madrid, then I moved to Barcelona and, later, I lived in Sitges, which is one of my favorite places in the world," she says.
