Sandra Bullock breaks the silence about the death of her partner: "He asked me not to make the illness public"
The actress explains that her partner, photographer Bryan Randall, preferred her diagnosis to be private
BarcelonaThree years after the death of her partner due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), American actress Sandra Bullock has broken her silence on what it has meant for her to live with this disease and, finally, to lose her life partner, photographer Bryan Randall. In a conversation on the podcast Smartless, hosted by fellow actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Bullock explained that her partner explicitly asked her not to make the illness public. "I wasn't allowed to talk about it. That's what he asked me and that's what I did," recalls the Oscar winner for The Blind Side (2009). Although she assures that she understands Randall's request, she admits that having to carry the diagnosis in silence isolated her, especially during the COVID pandemic, when she had to be particularly attentive to her children, Louis and Laila.
"My grieving process for Bryan began four years before he died," details Bullock, who recalls that her partner was ill for half of the years their relationship lasted. "The love of my life left long before his body – the actress continues –. I don't think I assimilated it until after he died, because I was immersed in this continuous cycle."
Initially, only her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, knew about Randall's diagnosis. Later, Bullock also confided in two of her best friends, Jennifer Aniston and Amanda Anka, Jason Bateman's wife. "When the physical illness was added to the mental health issue – a topic people don't usually talk about – a combination of factors occurred that made everything very dark," she details. The actress assures that she has never been scared by illnesses, but that throughout the process she was particularly worried about her children, who were still young and who saw Randall as a father figure even though he was not their father.
Randall's death took place in August 2023. At that time, the photographer's family, who was 57 years old, issued a statement detailing that he had been diagnosed with ALS three years prior, but that he had preferred to keep the illness private.
Randall and Bullock met in 2015, when he portrayed Louis, the actress's adopted son. The relationship became public some time later, when they attended the wedding of Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux together. Although Bullock considers Randall the love of her life, they never got married. In fact, the actress has only been married once: it was to motorcycle builder Jesse James, who cheated on her on numerous occasions and from whom she divorced in 2010, a few weeks after winning an Oscar that she dedicated to who was then her husband.
