The battle for electric cars in Europe has long since become a duel between aspirational or luxury brands and SUVs or crossovers with enough space to transport the whole family. Volvo has now unveiled its eighth electric car, the EX60, a vehicle designed to compete in the aspirational compact SUV segment against the new BMW iX3 and the Mercedes GLC EQamong others.

The new EX60 debuts a new modular platform called SPA3, which Geely, the parent company of the Swedish brand, will implement in other models across its range. This new modular platform employs a construction system called mega-casting, which allows for the integration of various components into a single large block of recycled aluminum in the central and rear sections of the chassis using a high-pressure casting process. This reduces production costs while maintaining the car's overall weight. Beyond this innovation, the SPA3 platform also utilizes a battery mounting process directly onto the body, operates with an 800-volt system (enabling faster and more powerful charging), and will form the basis for all future Volvo models.

Mechanically, the Volvo EX60 offers three power and battery options: the P6 or Single Motor (a single motor, 374 hp, and an 80 kWh battery), the P10 or Twin Motor (two motors with 510 hp and a 91 kWh battery), and the version with the longest range, the P12, with two motors, 680 hp, and a 112 kWh battery. These powertrain options allow for theoretical ranges of 620 kilometers for the entry-level P6 version, 660 kilometers for the P10 version, and 810 kilometers for the P12 version, making it the electric SUV with the greatest range on the market.

Regarding charging times, the new Volvo EX60 is compatible with AC charging points up to 22 kW, and up to 370 kW on a DC charging point, which means the possibility of charging 80% of the batteries in 20 minutes and recovering 340 kilometers of range in just 10 minutes.

A sober and functional aesthetic

The new Volvo EX60 maintains the brand's design philosophy. Its lines create a sober and functional look, avoiding any ostentatious or risky aesthetic choices. In short, the EX60 is what you'd expect from Volvo: elegant, functional, and featuring the brand's signature lighting with its Thor's Hammer LED headlights, as the Swedish automaker has dubbed them. The new EX60 measures 4.8 meters long and weighs over 2.3 tons, solidifying its position as a vehicle with a clear family focus, yet the body lines create a sense of lightness and restraint, contributing to visual balance and harmony.

The interior maintains a sensible tone with a digital cockpit dominated by a large 15.4-inch central screen which, unlike other Volvo vehicles, is horizontally oriented, and by a set-back instrument cluster strongly reminiscent of minivans from 10 or 15 years ago. The trunk has a capacity of 523 liters, plus another 58 liters under the front hood, and with plenty of space in the second row of seats, allowing for better interior space.

Before the end of the year, the Cross Country version will arrive on the market, associated with the P10 and P12 engines (i.e., with all-wheel drive systems) and a raised body thanks to an air suspension system and electronic shock absorbers that work together with the mechanical frequency-selective shock absorbers to offer comfort and stability even in weather conditions.

Finally, the new Volvo EX60 will arrive in our market at the end of summer, with a base price of €64,900 (price of the entry-level P6 version), and rising to €73,975 for the performance P12 version.
