Antoni Bassas' analysis: 'Amnesty, Self-Hatred, and Self-Esteem'

The draft leaked yesterday states that the amnesty law "does not respond to any whim or mere voluntarism," but rather seeks to "improve coexistence." But it's clear that these fine words are of no use.

How would you feel if you were to agree on an amnesty law, the law were to be approved, a year later it was still not fully applied, the Constitutional Court was about to say that it was constitutional and, even so, it was not applied to you because the Supreme Court went so far as to fabricate that you had been charged with embezzlement – that there was no amnesty –, everyone would wait to see what the European Court of Human Rights would say about all this and years would go by? without the amnesty being applied to him? (And excuse the length of the question.)

It seems as if everyone is happy that Puigdemont isn't returning and that the Supreme Court is doing their work for them. I include the Spanish government in this, because of the scandal the right would create, and the rest of the parties, who are happy enough to have Puigdemont out of the picture and be able to blame the Supreme Court and call it acting in rebellion.

The draft leaked yesterday states that the amnesty law "doesn't respond to any whim or mere voluntarism," but rather seeks to "improve coexistence." But it's clear that these fine words are worthless. In the Supreme Court, because Marchena and Llarena only live to indulge in the pleasure of putting Puigdemont in prison, even if it's just for a couple of nights. In the PP, because they've made a life of attacking Catalonia, and Puigdemont is ideal for turning him into a puppet and beating him up. And in the PSOE, because if Puigdemont takes too long to return, they have one less problem. And one last thing on this matter: not implementing the amnesty hurts Puigdemont and Junqueras, of course, but it's also a mockery of all of us, the citizens, who with our vote have decided that certain policies should be implemented.

I'll end by echoing the presentation of the Honorary Prize for Catalan Literature, which took place yesterday at the Palau de la Música, to the philosophy professor and writer Pere Lluís Font. In his acceptance speech, Font said: "If we are a nation, it's because we have our own language. In each language, the depths of the personality of its speakers shine through in a different way." And speaking of the country's lack of linguistic awareness, Pere Lluís Font added: "The worst evil of the Catalans is self-hatred".

Font led us to the front of the street when he said the following: "The most difficult of revolutions is the mental one. Servitude is comfortable when accompanied by bread and circuses." Self-hatred is combated with self-esteem.

Good morning.
