Unsafe start to the week with new downpours

Civil Protection elevates the Inuncat plan on the Ebro to emergency status

BarcelonaInstability will remain in the Mediterranean area for several more days due to the presence of the dana Alice, bringing cold air at high altitudes and maritime winds laden with moisture that will reach the coast. Sunday ended with torrential downpours in the Montsià region, where ravines burst their banks and streets turned into rivers. For example, up to 11 p.m. 194 l/m2 in Mas de Barberans, with 44 mm fallen in just 30 minutes (at the end of this article we report in greater detail on the accumulated amounts).

Civil Protection has activated themaximum alert due to the risk of torrential rains along the entire southern coast, from Alcanar to Salou, and the Inuncat has entered into emergency phase throughout the Ebro area.

For this Monday, Civil Protection maintains the Inuncat plan alert, and Meteocat has yellow warnings active, especially in the south of the country, but also in the rest of the central coast and the northern third due to the risk of downpours. The Aemet (Mexico City Meteorological Agency) also has alerts activated in the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Community.

Monday: New showers in the south and more scattered showers on the coast and in the northern third

Rain will return in the form of fresh downpours in the south of the country, with greater intensity in Montsià and Baix Ebre, as well as in much of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The precipitation will continue in areas where it has been raining heavily and continuously for days. During the early morning, showers will continue to affect Terres de l'Ebre, with a break in the mid-morning, as some weather models indicate the downpours will move further out to sea. However, during the afternoon, unstable weather will increase in the northern third and along the coast, where scattered showers will fall in the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees, as well as in the north of Central Catalonia.

All this with a mild climate, no frost at high altitudes in the Pyrenees, and temperatures that, in general, will experience little change and remain slightly above what would be expected in mid-October. In fact, the thermometer could rise slightly more in Terres de l'Ebre and Valencia, although maximum temperatures will generally range between 24°C and 27°C.

Partly cloudy day with clearings towards the west and the Pyrenees, although instability will increase across the country in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the Balearic Islands, with local rainfall increasing. Over the past four days, up to 183 l/m (36.5 US gal/ft) has accumulated.2 in the Pitiusas.

In the Valencian Country, the flood will continue to affect the territory, and there is a forecast of new downpours that, locally, could exceed 40 or 50 l/m.2 in just over half an hour and with very abundant accumulations in 24 hours.

Tuesday and Wednesday: does not clean at all

The disposition of the atmospheric centers of action at the European level will mean that, at our latitudes, we will continue to be under the control of unstable and uncertain weather, with the possibility of rain across much of the western Mediterranean coast. The culprit will be a powerful anticyclone, located between England and Ireland, which will block "normal" atmospheric circulation in the north of the continent and make the weather very changeable in our region. The distribution and amount of rainfall that will ultimately fall will have to be confirmed in the coming days, but in some regions, we are already talking about a fairly rainy October. And all of this while we are still in the middle of the month.

In short, we will see renewed showers in the south of the country, as well as along the coast and in the northeast. Inland, there will be clearer skies, especially in the West and the Lleida Pyrenees. There will be little change in terms of temperatures.

Total rainfall in Catalonia (Saturday and Sunday)

In Catalonia the most notable records from last Saturday were the 86 l/m² of Mas de Barberans which, added to the 194 l/m² accumulated this Sunday add up to a total of 280 l/m2 in 48 hours. In the Els Ports Natural Park they add up to a total of 191 l/m2 In the two days, in Aldover a total of 132 l/m² and in Alfacs they add up to 121 l/m2All of this has caused severe flooding in towns such as Godall (Montsià) and the closure of the AP-7 highway (completely flooded) between Freginals and Ulldecona.
