BarcelonaThe instability is relentless, and today will be another day of downpours in our area. In fact, despite the morning lull in much of Catalonia, it has been raining heavily since mid-morning on the southern coast of Valencia, prompting the Aemet (Metropolitan Meteorological Agency) to issue a red alert for this area due to the ongoing downpours. The rain is especially heavy in Safor and Ribera Baixa, with a notable accumulation of 122 l/m² in Gandia, 102 of which fell in just one hour.

Heavy torrential downpours yesterday particularly affected Terres de l'Ebre. The most affected region was Montsià, where many ravines burst their banks yesterday and streets became veritable rivers. Rainfall reached nearly 200 l/m² locally in just a few hours, causing serious flooding and incidents. Since Saturday, accumulations have been extraordinary in some cases (you'll find full details and more images of the storm at the end of this report). Heavy rainfall has also been significant over the weekend, causing numerous problems in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, and the weather is expected to remain unsettled today.

The dana Alice And the humidity-laden sea winds are relentless, and the downpours are expected again today, Monday. After a calm morning in much of Catalonia—with only a few scattered showers—rain will return in the afternoon, and not just in the south of the country. There are numerous alerts for heavy showers and thunderstorms in other regions of Catalonia, as well as in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. Civil Protection maintains the maximum alert for the risk of torrential rain along the entire southern coast, from Alcanar to Salou, after the Inuncat (National Institute of Unity) entered the emergency phase yesterday for the entire Ebro region.

Forecast map for this Monday morning.

Monday: New showers and strong storms

Rain will return in the form of fresh downpours in the south of the country, with greater intensity in Montsià and Baix Ebre, as well as in much of Valencia and the Balearic Islands. The precipitation will recur in areas that have been experiencing heavy, continuous rainfall for days. During the morning, there will be a break in the intense rain, with scattered, generally light showers in the center and south of the country. However, be careful in the afternoon, as the rain will gain ground again in the Ebro and the Valencian Community, with renewed downpours. This band of rain will, as the hours pass and into the evening, circulate northward toward more areas of the coast and the pre-coastal region, including Barcelona and Girona. In addition, afternoon clouds will also grow, bringing very irregular showers and thunderstorms that could be severe in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, the pre-coastal region, and Central Catalonia.

Forecast map for this Monday afternoon.

Partly cloudy day, with clearer and calmer skies in the western part of the country and the High Pyrenees, although instability will increase across the country in the afternoon. Showers and thunderstorms will continue in the Balearic Islands, with local intensity expected, especially in Ibiza and Formentera starting in the afternoon. Over the past four days, rainfall has reached 183 l/m.2 In the Pitiusas, specifically in San Juan de Labritja. In Valencia, the storm will bring new downpours that could locally exceed 40 or 50 l/m.2 in just over half an hour, with very heavy accumulations over 24 hours. The Aemet (Spanish Meteorological Agency) is keeping the entire Valencian Country and much of the Balearic Islands on alert.

All this with a not very cold environment, with no frost at high altitudes in the Pyrenees, and temperatures that, in general, will experience little change and will remain slightly above what would be expected in mid-October. In fact, the thermometer could rise slightly more in Terres de l'Ebre and the Valencian Country, although maximum temperatures will generally range between 21°C and 26°C.

Tuesday and Wednesday: does not clean at all

The disposition of the atmospheric centers of action at the European level will mean that, in our latitudes, we will continue to be under the control of unstable and uncertain weather, with the possibility of rain across much of the western Mediterranean coast. The culprit will be a powerful anticyclone, located between England and Ireland, which will block the usual atmospheric circulation in the north of the continent and make the weather very changeable in our latitudes. The distribution and amount of rainfall that will ultimately fall will have to be confirmed in the coming days, but in some regions, we are already talking about a fairly rainy October. And we are only halfway through the month.

In short, we will see renewed showers in the south of the country, as well as along the coast and in the northeast. Inland, there will be clearer skies, especially in the West and the Lleida Pyrenees. There will be little change in terms of temperatures.

Total rainfall in Catalonia (Saturday and Sunday)

The downpours have been torrential in southern Catalonia, especially on Sunday, but the weekend's total rainfall is extraordinary, especially in Montsià. The most notable figures on Saturday were the 86 l/m² at Mas de Barberans, which, combined with the 195 l/m² accumulated this Sunday, bring the total to nearly 280 l/m².2 in 48 hours. In the Els Ports Natural Park they add up to a total of 191 l/m2 In the two days, in Aldover a total of 140 l/m² and in Alfacs they add up to 160 l/m2However, there are unofficial records of over 300 l/m² inland in the Montsià Mountains. The intensity of the rains is notable, as, for example, in Mas de Barberans, 44 l/m² fell yesterday in just 30 minutes. This has caused severe flooding in towns such as Godall and La Ràpita (Montsià), and the closure of the AP-7 highway (completely flooded) between Freginals and Ulldecona.
