The rain is back: be aware of the downpours that will affect Valencia
Locally, rainfall could exceed 150 or 200 l/m² in Valencia
A line of instability and a flow of moisture-laden maritime winds will bring a significant drop in rainfall to Valencia this Sunday, with the first episode of rain potentially bringing torrential downpours. The rain will also affect the rest of the Valencian Community and will reach Catalonia from mid-afternoon onwards, initially concentrated along the coast and pre-coastal areas. Between Monday and Tuesday, rain is expected across the region, welcome news after several weeks of dry weather and unusually high temperatures for this time of year.
Sunday: heavy rains in the Valencian Community
The week will end with a repeat of the weather pattern of the last few days, with more clouds near the sea, fog inland, and more sunshine towards the Pyrenees. However, cloud cover will gradually increase, leaving the sky quite cloudy or overcast from mid-afternoon onwards, when the first showers will arrive on the Catalan coast. In the Valencian Community, maritime winds will strengthen and directly impact the mountain ranges near the coast, bringing rain that will intensify and could locally exceed 150 or 200 liters per square meter. There will also be showers in the Balearic Islands, though more scattered and lighter. Temperatures will drop slightly.
In this regard, Aemet has issued a red alert for heavy rain and storms affecting the Valencian coast, an orange alert for inland areas of Valencia, and a yellow alert for the rest of the Valencian Community. The state agency warns of the possibility of rainfall accumulations exceeding 180 l/m² in 12 hours in Valencia.
Monday: the rain moves north
The week will begin with even more unsettled weather in Catalonia, likely to be the rainiest day of this episode. The bulk of the precipitation will shift from the Valencian Community to southern Catalonia, with the heaviest rainfall expected at both ends of the region, where accumulations could exceed 50 liters per square meter in some areas. Rain is also expected in the rest of the country, although lighter and more intermittent, with accumulations ranging between 5 and 20 liters per square meter in many districts. Snow will return to the Pyrenees, especially to the southern slopes and the eastern third, with the snow level hovering around 1,800 meters.
More rain Tuesday
Weather models are still quite uncertain regarding the distribution and intensity of Tuesday's rainfall, but it seems clear that unsettled weather will persist, especially in the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands. Rain will be more concentrated along the coast and in the Catalan and Basque Country, with considerable cloud cover throughout the day and temperatures remaining fairly stable, with a mild midday and mild temperatures in the early morning.
