Record temperatures in this start of September
Canicular heat with near 40 °C in Ponent
BarcelonaThe temperature climbed sharply again, with new records, this Thursday. At the Fabra observatory, it reached 33.1 °C, half a degree less than Wednesday, when 33.6 °C was recorded. Yesterday's value is the second highest since 1914 in a September in the city of Barcelona. In Ponent and the interior of the Ebro, they brushed against 40 °C (39 °C in Vinebre, one of the highest since 2022). If we take the set of Meteocat's automatic stations, 27 out of 128 broke the record for a month of September in 20 years of data, especially those located in Empordà, the Pyrenees, and Ponent.
And we will continue talking about extreme heat for the next three days. The temperature will range between 33 °C and 36 °C in many regions. 36 °C will be reached in many points of the interior, with heat that is unusual for these dates. Temperature records could be reached, once again, in Ponent, in the Empordà, and in the interior of the Ebro valley, where they could exceed 40 °C. The minimum temperature will also rise and tropical minimums will once again gain ground on the coast, in the pre-coastal area, and in Ponent, with torrid values (equal to or greater than 25 °C) on the central coast.
Friday: sweltering atmosphere
Day with intervals of morning clouds on the Costa Daurada and in the Ebro, with some decorative cumulus in the afternoon in the Pyrenees. The mercury will reach the highs of the episode in some points on Friday, when the maximums will reach 37 °C or 38 °C in more places in the interior, with some local records of 40 °C. These are unusual values and, in many cases, record-breaking, which would not even be common at the end of July or beginning of August. The weather will remain calm, the sun will be the protagonist and there will be no precipitation on the horizon.
In fact, Meteocat has issued a danger warning for intense heat for Friday and Saturday that covers a large part of the regions of Ponent, Central Catalonia and the south, and even some regions of the pre-coastal area or the central coast.
Warm peak during the weekend
The mass of warm air affecting the Iberian Peninsula will reach its peak during the weekend, when the temperature will be exceptional for the dates at 1,500 meters. On Saturday the temperature will reach 38 °C in the central pre-coastal area and in Bages, and could graze 39 °C or 40 °C in the interior of Empordà, in Ponent and in the Ebro valley, a situation that will also repeat on Sunday. In the sky, some thin clouds and a lot of haze will appear, which will accentuate the feeling of heat. On the coast, we will continue with sultriness and torrid nights on the central coast.
Monday and Tuesday we will continue with heat, but not as extreme. From the middle of next week temperatures would begin to normalize and some thunderstorms could appear in the Lleida Pyrenees.
