The weather

A warm morning to start a quiet Tuesday, but on the verge of a significant change in the weather.

The first significant snowfall of the season could arrive in the Pyrenees on Thursday.

BarcelonaWe started the week with stable and calm weather, something that will continue today, although the temperature contrast will be even more pronounced. We woke up to cold temperatures everywhere, with some frost outside the Pyrenees, but the highs will rise and midday will be somewhat milder than yesterday. However, all of this will be with temperatures that won't be very different from normal for this time of year. High clouds will circulate this Tuesday and combine with sunshine without any significant impact. But Wednesday will bring more instability, and this will be the prelude to an active cold front arriving on Thursday, which will bring rain and snow.

Tuesday: High clouds and a cool morning

This Wednesday we woke up to even lower morning temperatures and frost in parts of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees valleys, as well as in some inland areas. Many minimum temperatures ranged between 0 and 5°C inland, and even lower in some places. The lowest minimums recorded were -4°C in Das (Cerdanya), -1.5°C in Prades (Baix Camp), and -1°C in Guixers-Valls (Solsonès). The pre-coastal area and much of the coast also experienced a chilly, late-autumn night, with temperatures between 5 and 10°C. In short, it's essential to dress warmly before leaving home early in the morning. Maximum temperatures will rise slightly, but will remain relatively mild, with many areas reaching between 17 and 23°C. All this with calm weather expected on Tuesday. The sky will see intervals of high, thin clouds from midday onwards, but they will be harmless, and sunshine and calm conditions will prevail, making for a pleasant and enjoyable day. Low clouds will be present along the southern coast during the morning, and some fog is expected in the central part of the country. A southerly wind will become widespread, and during the afternoon, gusts could reach over 40 or 50 km/h in the Empordà region and in some inland areas of the Ebro Valley.

Wednesday: Clear increase in cloud cover

We'll begin to notice the first signs of the significant weather change arriving on Thursday, and we'll see it in the sky. High and mid-level clouds will gradually move in, creating partly cloudy to overcast skies, with the first scattered showers in some areas. The temperature will remain relatively stable, ahead of a sharp drop following the passage of the cold front on Thursday.

More active front ahead of Thursday

The passage of a very active cold front on Thursday will be accompanied by cold air at high altitudes and will cause precipitation to reactivate and initially fall in the Ponent and in the south during the early morning, eventually sweeping across the rest of the regions during the morning and the rest of the day, locally with intense showers that could accumulate significant amounts.

This change in weather will be notable not only for the rain, wind, and temperature drop, but especially for bringing the first significant snowfall of the season to the higher elevations of the Pyrenees. By Friday morning, accumulations of 20 to 30 centimeters of new snow are possible, particularly in the Pallars Sobirà, Alt Urgell, and Andorra regions, which could be the areas most affected by this first snowfall of autumn.
