No clear end is seen to this long episode of intense heat
The temperatures will rise a little more this Sunday, with a lot of heat and mugginess
The month of August has begun just as July ended: with intense heat. This Saturday has been a very warm and muggy day overall in many regions, especially near the sea. Temperatures have dropped slightly inland and in the north, mainly due to the presence of more suspended dust and some cloud intervals. But this has not prevented another very oppressive day. And this Sunday, thermometers will rise a little more, with a suffocating atmosphere. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms were locally strong today in the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and Ports, which led to the activation of the Inuncat plan alert. Until dinner time, some of these areas will still experience intense downpours, and some will be repeated this Sunday. Next week, temperatures will remain well above average, and there is no clear end in sight to this heat episode.
Sunday: suffocating day
Temperatures will rise a little more, both minimum and maximum. The night will be mild to warm again in general, with many tropical minimums and some torrid ones in coastal and southern areas. Humid atmosphere near the sea, especially in densely populated areas. Meteocat maintains the alert for nocturnal heat in coastal regions of the southern half.
At midday, many maximums will range between 35 ºC and 40 ºC in the pre-coastal and inland areas, with the highest values concentrated in Ponent, Conca de Tremp, or in pre-Pyrenean valleys. It will be another suffocating day.
All in all, with sun and calm in the morning, with the permission of some traces of thin clouds – especially in the southern half – and some low morning clouds in the Ebro and some coastal stretch. In the afternoon, cloudiness will grow again in mountainous areas, leaving some irregular showers and thunderstorms in parts of the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, and the Ports area. In principle, they will be less intense and extensive than on Saturday, but some local downpour is not ruled out.
Heat without respite for days
Looking ahead to next week, temperatures will remain well above average, with only minor fluctuations. Unlike what the maps indicated days ago, there is no clear end in sight for this long period of intense heat, and it appears this situation will extend almost until the end of the month.
On Monday and Tuesday, more showers and thunderstorms will fall in the northern half of the country, and on the remaining days, some showers will repeat in the Pyrenees. This rain, where it falls, will be accompanied by mud, but will also help to slightly cool the atmosphere in the afternoons.
